Nintendo clearly wants to transition to digital only for some reason, even though they're releasing some first party games on the carts still.
I keep seeing people say that, but I don't see any evidence of it. Nintendo (or at least the video game publishing division) seems to be the biggest proponent of "game on cart" releases. Even Limited Run Games is announcing that they will make Game Key Cards for many of their releases.
I am surprised that college basketball gets more viewers than NBA games.
Ok, but what does that have to do with studio logos? Did WB spin off DC Studios?
The Celtics just sold for $6.1 billion. Both teams have a comparable legacy, though LA is a much bigger (shared) market. At the time of the sale, the Celtics were the defending champions and favorites to win again with a young set of players. The Lakers are a contender, but would need a bit of luck to get there, and LeBron is on the wrong side of ancient.
Overall, it seems like a fair price in the context.
Not shocked that they traded him. I am more curious about who will be left. Tatum for sure since he is an all-star with low trade value. Probably Brown, since the Celtics are (hopefully) not in total tank mode and it is impossible to get comparable value back for a player of his caliber. Who else will they keep though?
I agree that we should strive to make the world as safe as possible, but people need to take some responsibility for not putting themselves in danger and teaching their kids how to do so as well. If it was not a car, it could have been a bus, a trolley, or a heavy bike (this is a small child we are talking about). The kid could have run off a cliff or fell into the stream and drowned.
As a first generation American, I have noticed that some American parents do not teach their kids enough about how to cross the street (shocking in such a car centric society).
The headline is click bait. I would only judge the launch as "not gone well" when the system fails to sell.
Addressing a couple of the points they made in the article:
The announced price is more than people expected, but day 1 buyers are probably die hard fans and influencers, who would buy it anyway, at double the price. The real test is going to be the holidays and how the price looks side by side with rivals. Based on the news from Microsoft, the Nintendo prices will be in line with the competition. Also, if price does cause issues, Nintendo may get a "free" price drop in the US when Trump drops tariffs (consumers pay less but Nintendo maintains their margins).
Having retailer pre-order systems fail under the Switch 2 load is not Nintendo's fault. If anything, it shows that the system will sell well initially. Also, they are not losing sales if consumers get a website crash instead of "sold out".
And the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance or the DS and 3DS. All the follow ups fail to live up to the heights of the predecessor, but not all failures.
So it may be worth $10 for some people, then. I am fine with a cheaper game with slightly worse graphics. I am not sure I even notice if a game is running at 60 fps or 30 fps. Even when a game dips below 30, I notice it getting a bit choppy, but a game should be engaging enough that I will not pay it any attention.
Not really. People on Lemmy are paranoid. Not saying that corporations are not assholes looking to maximize how much of your money they are getting but they are not out to hurt you. Believe it or not, corporations actually want consumers to like them. Most corporate actions are not evil, they are caused by workers being lazy and cutting corners.
What seems more likely? Nintendo testing remote bricking of systems on customers instead of QA or Nintendo OS developers not having firmware ready by the time manufacturing started (and IT scrambling last minute to bring up update servers in time for launch).
Isn't it rumored that Nintendo has been manufacturing Switch 2 hardware for years? Those early manufactured consoles are not going to have a fully functional OS. Makes sense that they have a basic firmware that can connect to the update servers and fetch the released OS once it is available.
Are they getting ahead of a leak?
They know that someone is about to spoil the release date, so they quickly throw together a tweet to control the message and buy time for a more comprehensive and thought out announcement as part of the Nintendo Direct.
According to the article, the upgrade will get you "a higher resolution and improved framerates."
For me, that upgrade is not worth it. I will play the game entirely in portable mode and my vision is not what it used to be, so I don't care about resolution.
I don't want to sync my bookmarks. The sites I want bookmarked on my desktop are not the same as the sites I want bookmarked on my phone nor the sites I want bookmarked on my work laptop.
As an occasional user, I am sad to see it go. Are there any other sites out there to maintain a list of links that I may find useful in the future? With a web UI and not self hosted?
Do other games need a major performance patch?
Isn't Steam even more always online?
Obviously! From the makers of Strategy
It is not an unexpected outcome. The Celtics are up against the wall and want to win for Tatum. Motivations fade and fatigue catches up to them, so I would not give them a chance in the series.
I have not watched the series, so can anyone point out any particularly egregious events? I am prone to think that Green complaining bloody murder means the series was well reffed.
Do you have a source for Nintendo only having one cart size? I have heard people saying that Nintendo does offer multiple cart sizes, but they are all (relatively) expensive.
Major points:
- Price increases are coming.
- They will pause producing most games except for cheap to manufacture, card-only games.
- For games with app adaptations, upcoming expansions will get a digital release before physical.
- They will design, develop, and prepare future games to hit the ground running when tariffs come down.
It’s bigger, it’s more powerful, and it has some weird Nintendo control gimmicks.

TL;DR:
- Joy-Cons are more comfortable for adult hands, though still not as big as other systems.
- Mouse mode joy-cons are awkward. The buttons are small and there is no place to rest your other fingers and palm.
- You will want to have a table if you are playing mouse-oriented games like Metroid Prime 4 and Civ 7.
- Graphics seem better than the Steam Deck, worse than a PS4 Pro, but will improve as games are optimized.
- Mouse aim works well in Metroid.
- Mario Kart World is good and Knockout Tour is a fun addition to the game.
Accessory maker says 3D mock-up at CES is sourced from an actual console.

An etiquette question for the community: if you attend a game night at your friendly local game store, how much do you buy from the store?
Obviously, game store is not (just) hosting board games to give people a place to hang out and have fun. They are doing it to attract new customers and get people to buy games. If many people come but no one spends, the store might decide that they need to cancel the event and schedule more CCGs and minis. So how often do you buy a game at your local store to express your gratitude for the owners letting you use their space?

During the pandemic, I rebuilt my computer but with GPU prices being insanely inflated, I decided to limp along with my old GPU (a GeForce GTX 760). The issue is that I have a 4k monitor and my current card can barely handle my desktop, never mind a game.
I have heard that prices are coming back down to a sane level, so I am looking for part suggestions. I am not looking to play new games or ultra high settings, but I would want to at least be able to handle older/indie games, on medium settings, at a steady 30 FPS.

I am looking for a note talking app to keep work notes in. My requirements are:
- Allow hierarchical organization of notes (like project1, project1/build, project1/configure) and easy to navigate to different notes.
- Allow basic formatting (heading, code block).
- Run locally
- (Optionally) Have a table of contents for quick navigation
Obsidian looked promising and had the additional benefit of storing notes in Markdown format for easy export. Unfortunately, I would need to buy a commercial license in order to store work-related information.
New Joy-con buttons, 1080p screen also feature in MobaPad's "first-hand information."

MobaPad is a Switch controller and game case maker (that I have never heard of), so they should have reliable info. They said that:
- The Switch 2 will have physical cartridges and the slot will also be able to accept Switch 1 games.
- There will be a new button on the back of each Joy-Con, behind the triggers.
- There will be a new button on the right Joy-Con, by the Home button.
Are there any good April Fools jokes today? For example, a few years ago Google announced a sewage based ISP (i.e. flush some fiber optic cable down the toilet and they would fish it out and connect it).
The only one I have come across is IGN article about the Nintendo Virtual Boy Pro.
I've been thinking about Gunpei Yokoi a lot lately. Before his tragic death in 1997, Yokoi was a game designer at Nintendo — one of the first, in fact. For them, he created the Game & Watch, the Virtual Boy, and the original Game Boy; over in games, he produced games like

TL;DR: The author asserts that Nintendo is able to be so creative because they retain employees long term rather than hiring and firing like other game developers.
Some excerpts that I found interesting:
> All of the designers of the original Super Mario Bros. on the original Nintendo Entertainment System are credited designers on Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
> Back in 2013, the late Satoru Iwata — the former president of Nintendo — said this at a shareholder meeting: > > "If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results, employee morale will decrease, and I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world."
Has anyone ever shopped at the online store Gate Play? I have never heard of them.
I saw an out of print expansion being sold below MSRP and wanted to see if anyone knew if the site was a scam. I am going to pay by credit card and read the terms of service, but don't want to have to bother with charge backs if I am not their first victim.
Share your gift ideas, because I am a bit stumped.
Are there any Lemmy clients that allow me to quick change accounts and return back to the last community or post that I was looking at? Ideally, one that has an Android app version.
This matters to me because whenever I see any discussion of instances degenerating or having uptime issues, the go to answer is to create accounts on several servers. It is also good to allow me to have several distinct "identies" (for example a professional one, a hobby one, a local one).
From what I understand, KBin can import a Lemmy Community as a Magazine. Is the inverse also possible? Can I subscribe to a KBin magazine in Lemmy?
I want to subscribe to @boardgames@kbin.social, but !boardgames@kbin.social returns no search results on https://lemmy.world/ .
