Tried any Jack McDevitt? I like both of his main series (Alex Benedict and Priscilla Hutchins ones). Remember enjoying deep six, chindi, and seeker in particular. He has a unique feel which I think I saw someone describe as science fiction archaeology which I think is apt.
I think if we sticky a thread for voting we can get something chosen to discuss by the end of the month. You want me to write it up and post it?
It could be that I listened to them on audiobook but I kinda pictured an Arnold/Terminator kinda person.

I'll plug the !printsf@lemmy.ca community. Two months in and last months read was Iain Banks Player of Games and this months is Winter World by A.G. Riddle. Usually have a vote thread 6 weeks before the end of the month to pick a new one.
Maybe do a series of horror movie watch parties for October instead?

What sci-fi books are missing something that seems obvious to us today (and is somewhat central to the story / setting)?
My first thought was Dune with the ban on thinking machines. If you asked just about anyone today they would say the far future would involve computers everywhere. But Frank Herbert wrote Dune in 1965 when computers were huge, specialized machines and we hadn't even landed on the moon yet. And he saw a future where not only computers became ubiquitous but we're then rejected.
So what books jump out as missing something that we would find inconceivable today?
Lions have the nationally televised 1pm est game today. Why is there only 1 one o'clock game and tons of evening games? Don't know, don't care. Because the Lions play at 1!
Who's everyone excited to see do their thing today. Personally I want to see how the rookie WRs are today. It's looking like we're gonna need at least one of them at the start of the season. So can Drummond, Cota, or Green make a case it should be them? Defensively I got nothing, maybe the DB depth?

Seems Jamo's hamstring injury yesterday will keep him out of the rest of preseason and then his 6 game suspension starts. Silver lining, should be nice and healthy when he gets back but sucks for his development. Hopefully the rest of the WR room heals up and/or steps up because it's looking pretty thin right now.
Opening up the RB3 positon on the roster. Yesterday reporters were chatting about Mohamad Ibrahim looking good. Probably not a coincidence but ups his chances.

No real surprises in my opinion. The front office, coaching staff, and players all seem to be on the same page which is nice.

Family was in town and we taught them Cat in the Box and Terraforming Mars. Both were a big hit with an edge to Cat because of the decreased complexity. Haven't played much of TM at 4, usually at 2, and the strategy changes quite a bit!
As of the other day the series was on sale at GOG. ~$30 for 0 though 6.
New to the series and started with 0 and been enjoying it.
Haven't played but from another thread I saw about that game awhile ago was to try and play co-op to start. Was told it can be very difficult initially playing solo.
World of Tanks is similar too. A little faster paced perhaps but doing the right thing in the right place is a 1000% more important than reflexes imo. Never played in clans and it might be different at that level.
Commented on something like this the other day. Official votes should be limited to its own community with only active votes. The slate of votes would run at standard times (i.e. Sunday to Sunday). The agora could be used for discussion and meeting a threshold for a topic to clear to be put on the voting slate.
I feel like a copy bot just makes a ghost town because there is no OP actually invested in the post. Might not matter as much here though because it's more news-y than some other communities I've seen do this. Really weird to get posts requesting recommendations but from a bot. Like what's the point?

The in-laws heard about it from the Today show and begged to play it. Ended after the first round and howls of "The Today show lied". It was not a pleasant evening but that was only a part of it.
