What piece of kit or setup represents the pinnacle of your hobby/profession?
  • Photography: Peak Design quick detach clips, strap and baseplate.

Photography is just a hobby for me, so I tend to lean towards 3rd party lenses and accessories that have a good price to quality ratio. I can not overstate how substantial a difference these clips and straps have made for me. There is no comfortable way for someone to hang a camera around their neck or over their shoulder for more than a few hours with the OEM straps, let alone a full day. With these things I have backpacked multiple long weekend trips, taking my camera out of my bag in the morning and having it out all day. I can transition from a cross body dangle, to hanging from my backpack strap in seconds which is critical if I need to free my hands quickly.

    Love these things.

  • I just wanted to say that I love this place
  • I last looked at mastodon years ago, and got bored pretty quickly. It was a nice idea, but lacked…. Something. I came back as a Reddit refugee and found a hashtag for every occasion, a substantially expanded fediverse, and a couple of attempts to offer a Reddit like user experience.

I think that missing something was actually two things: 1. A forum where people can organize around moderated communities 2. (And more importantly) A critical mass of users to generate the content that satiates lurkers

  • Reminder that this is a thing that could happen.
  • What’s missing is a monetization strategy. Any social media platform at a scale larger than a small community is going to require some kind of revenue because servers in the basement just aren’t going to cut it for long.

Users might not like ads, but until they are willing to pay for subscriptions, that’s what they’re stuck with.

I wonder what percentage of Lemmy. World users have actually donated. Hopefully it’s sustainable enough that they can do more than pay for servers, but also hire some admins.

  • [Question] Best way to start hosting a MediaWiki instance?
  • I’ve never worked with mediawiki, but if you’re looking for advice I’d recommend taking the time to figure docker out. Just about anything you want to self host is going to have a docker image for you, so it’s a time investment that will yield immediate and significant rewards.

I’m not a huge fan of network chuck, but if you need a getting started his videos are a pretty good jumping off point: https://youtu.be/eGz9DS-aIeY

  • Privacy-focused alternatives to duckduckgo (ddg)?
  • I’ve been using DDG as a Google replacement for a 3-4 years now. I have to say that my experience in terms of search results has been the opposite of yours. Google’s ads were so prominent and the search results so lacking what I wanted to see, it has become totally useless to me. DDG on the other hand almost always shows me what I’m looking for in the first few results.

Having said that, I’ve been using DDG long enough that perhaps I’m just acclimated to its features and functionality.
