Democrats Will Win Again Once the Economy Tanks
  • Having elected a fascist autocrat, who already prepared the way by having the supreme court declare him above the law. Living in the country with the most militarized police, a nation with a massive capability to spy on it's own citizens, citizens who have little critical thinking capability to begin with. A society where social media creates the reality those poorly educated citizens live in, and social media is owned by oligarchs who benefit from a system where pleasing one narcissistic leader gives them power over regulators and increases their wealth more rapidly. I think people are a little optimistic to believe we can't call the next election today.

  • Will Trump Pressure Ukraine to Cut a Deal?
  • You have to frame everything in terms that apply to trump. His goal is to be in a room with Putin, being praised for dealing with the Ukraine problem. He wants to be acknowledged by another dictator and strong man, that's it. He'll definitely pressure both Ukraine and their European supporters to accept Russian conquest of Ukrainian territory so he can get a ceasefire. It's not because he hates Ukraine, he probably doesn't care about them at all, it's just the pursuit of affirmation for himself. It's up to Europe, and hopefully RoK, to push forward and give democracy a win to raise everyone's morale.

  • Punish Democrats or Stop Trump? Arab Americans are agonizing over their votes.
  • The issue is, it is already apocalyptic. It's genocide, the extermination of a population. It's going to be worse for Americans (and the world in general) if Trump is elected, but what if that world watched your family and friends die horribly, or helped kill them? As a Canadian I sure hope people can choke down the bile and keep fascism out of the white house, but we shouldn't act like there aren't groups of people who might think we all deserve whatever we get, regardless of it affecting them as well.

  • Israeli girl on Palestinian people: "I just think we need to kill them. Every one of them."
  • Opinion polls throughout the current genocide have seen Israeli public opinion around 80% in support of the campaign. I think it's obvious that not all Israelis and certainly not all Jewish people support genocide, the views expressed in the video are not uncommon and carry no negative social connotations in Israel though. That is the environment required for genocide.

  • Airstrike using two guided bombs on a building occupied by Russian UAV operators in the Kursk region.
  • Structures are designed to resist vertical loading, it's why the only buildings standing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki following the bombings were directly under the detonation point. They withstood the shockwave when loaded vertically, other buildings experienced side loading and collapsed. The comment about delayed fusing is right, but it's actually tough with these comniblock buildings, there's probably 30-40cm of reinforced concrete between each floor. Brick shit houses.

  • Hungary and Gazprom in Talks for Extra Russian Gas for Budapest in 2025
  • I visited Budapest this fall, there are a lot of Hungarians that don't support this government. That said, no matter how much it sucks for those people, it's time to start looking at removing Hungary from the EU. NATO has no removal framework since that is counter to the nature of defensive treaties, but having hostile nations within the alliance threatens it's integrity. Perhaps new structure will be needed to allow the quarantine of compromised members. At this point I would be very concerned if Hungary has full security access to NATO intelligence and planning, not to mention equipment.

  • US warns Israel to boost humanitarian aid into Gaza or risk losing weapons funding
  • Don't worry though, American forces will be on the ground with patriot batteries to support the genocide, we just have to say this for the annoying anti-genocide people.

  • Lost and found
  • Since I don't see much football stuff on Lemmy, this is Mohammed Salah, an Egyptian footballer and premier league royalty. YNWA

  • Germany will send more weapons to Israel soon, Scholz says
  • This is a lot like a gang initiating new members by having them commit a crime. You won't squeal on the crew if you're a criminal too. Maybe the 30s and 40s aren't so bad since Israel is mirroring the process since 48.

  • Ukrainian jet-propelled UAV flying over the Belgorod region.
  • "We have a cruise missile at home."

  • Israel could bomb Iran’s oil. Energy markets are noting it but not panicking.
  • It should be ok, oil infrastructure is usually pretty far from schools and hospitals, Israels preferred targets.

  • Asmongold Roasts the Weird Charracter Design in Dragon Age: The Veilguard: “This Is Just Awful”
  • My read on what he and others were concerned about was that DA Origins introduced an aesthetic of low fantasy, dark and medieval themes. Many felt, including him, that the new characters felt like very generic MOBA-style designs that didn't feel particularly at home in the DA world they hoped to see. Since some channels have gotten to play the game now the outlook seems to be changing with some creators saying the trailers and released material did a poor job of showing the overall art direction. Also, it seems fun, that helps. Keep in mind, a healthy concern over Bioware is very warranted these days.

  • No 10 fears ICC will ask UK to sign Benjamin Netanyahu arrest warrant
  • "Oh no, how will we avoid offending the genocidal butcher?" Wrings hands

  • EU funds Ukrainian defense industry with €400 million from frozen Russian asset proceeds
  • The key here is that this funding is for Ukrainian defense industry, it already has weapons systems capable of striking deep behind Russian lines. The US simply isn't going to budge on allowing western weapons to be used, their policy is looking towards relationship reset following the end of hostilities, they don't want Russia to lose since that could start a more prolonged cold war and period of instability. Ukraine will need to use it's own systems, fortunately it is becoming more and more capable by the month.

This is from memory so don't take it as fully accurate, but I believe Ukraine was something like the world's 6th largest arms manufacturer prior to the 2014 invasion of Crimea. They know how to make things go boom.

Ukranian drone records a Russian soldier attempting to climb down the outside of building.
  • Huh, looks like falling out of a window might be a more legit way to go for Russians than I thought.

  • Israelis receive threatening texts after Lebanon blasts
  • How shocking that this broad act of terrorism by the Israelis would prompt threats of terrorism in response. Nobody could have anticipated that.

  • Portugal declares a state of calamity as wildfires rage out of control
  • I am visiting family in Porto, it's been quite apocalyptic.

  • Russian Ka-52 "Alligator" attack helicopter shot down in the first days of the Kursk operation.
  • Definitely one of the Russian platforms that had proven effective in it's intended role. The KA-52 fleet has taken a lot of casualties fortunately.

  • JD Vance ate my dog and Elon Musk ate my cat. Will Trump address this very real issue?
  • This is a great article that cleverly shows how disinformation starts and spreads. If only MAGA folks could read.

  • Issue with filtering

I have recently been having an issue where filters are applied, not by me, while I'm browsing in Connect. Entire communities are showing no posts with the message, "Empty because all posts are being filtered". There are no filters turned on in the settings that I can see. Many comments are also hidden due to filters, including my own. I have checked in using the browser interface and everything is normal there.

Is there a setting I am missing, or do I have another issue with the app?

Edit: Issue solved, apparently I had blocked lemmy.world though I'm not sure how.

(Linux noob) Getting an error attempting to install Flatpacks via Software Manager

I am receiving this error when I attempt to install via the manager, but I am able to install via Terminal. That said I am getting an option to install for either System or User, which I haven't previously seen. I'm sure this is probably something pretty basic, but I'm fairly Linux illiterate... beyond knowing I can mess things up by fiddling without knowing what I'm doing.

I am on Nobara 37, Gnome 43.2, Wayland. I'd love a hand with this, thanks!

Edit: Thanks for the detailed answers! Issue resolved.
