  • I agree that this is happening. While we should be aware of what they're up to when it directly affects us, we could use more Canada specific content

I try to share what I can, feel free to share some as well :) If you have a website that you recommend, I can see if I can share more from there

  • I think the user is referring to the 'open by default' and 'supported links' feature in android apps, where clicking a link in a web browser opens it in the relevant app

    @Madbrad200@sh.itjust.works

I use this and it seems to work well. Boost should implement something similar, but in the meantime does this app help in your case?

  • While it's still somewhat of a blackbox, some definitions of "open source AI" are better than others

    https://opensource.org/ai

    The OSI one is decent

  • It's also early on for most of these platforms. They're relatively new, changing rapidly, and so it's harder to keep the platforms compatible with everything that's out there.

As an example, there have been a few improvements over the past short while around Mastodon-Lemmy compatibility

Once the software matures, I imagine it'll be easier to see the content in most popular formats

  • The format of the post also looked similar to spam posts at first glance. A lot of them are pushing AI things

  • While this won't be the case with everyone, it was mentioned a few times in a post I made here a long while back

    https://lemmy.ca/post/9443464

I’m a woman, and make no attempt to hide that fact in my posts. That said, I also don’t personally have much interest in talking about being a woman, so don’t sub to any of those places you linked.

Over on Reddit I just sort of let people assume I was male a lot of the time, since it wasn’t really relevant to what we were talking about. But from the start on Lemmy I’ve made sure to call out incorrect assumptions, downvote and give a talking to people stereotyping or being misogynistic, etc etc. And the more of us (of all genders) that make that same decision, the better things get

  • Thanks πŸ˜„

  • The Hedge fund is not doing well unfortunately

  • Done, you are now a mod!

Feel free to make a post to onboard more people if you would like. Some mod actions work better from a local account (ex. pinning and unpinning posts, and seeing certain reports), so it can help to have a secondary local account. Otherwise no harm in moderating from your main :)

  • According to Mr. McGowan’s complaint, the steward became visibly upset and allegedly stated, β€œIf your travel agent can’t order vegan food I am not helping you.”

The crew member reportedly showed the passengers Emirates’ computer records indicating they had not ordered vegan meals and subsequently declined to provide them with food, drinks, or coffee during the long-haul flight.

The aftermath proved equally frustrating for the passengers. Mr. McGowan reported making six separate complaints to Hays Travel in Glasgow, who insisted they had correctly booked vegan meals. After two months of communication between Hays and Emirates, the airline refused to acknowledge any error in their meal ordering system.

Well that's just unprofessional all around :( Long haul flight too

Emirates reported a 40% year-on-year surge in demand for plant-based meals across its global network.

Hopefully that means that there will be more effort to support different dietary options moving forward

  • Now I'm trying to regularly share news that is relevant for both developers and hobbyists. (Studio news, software milestones, talks, interesting columns/posts, etc.) I think I’ve done an okay job, but it’s still pretty low in search results when you search β€œgamedev Lemmy”, so I'm adding it here in case any of you out there are interested in the field.

    That sounds great!

As others have mentioned, you could reach out to the mods on !gamedev@programming.dev and offer to help moderate. Very often the mods will be happy with the extra help. It already has a lot of subscribers, but doesn't have as much activity. Having you on board might be the perfect blend.

You can also decide you want to try and grow your own community, in which case it might still be helpful to cross post your posts into the other comm to reach interested users

Regardless of what you go with, looking forward to seeing it grow. Thanks for working on it!

  • Good to know, Pixelfed logins have consistently been buggy for me. I hope they improve that over time

  • I would be good with that. The space communities could benefit from consolidation, they're active but spread out too much

I don't have a preference on which one to keep, both LW and mander.xyz seem like good choices

  • That's the idea, we also want to eventually let people donate to specific projects if they wanted to. So if someone uses one of the platforms (lemmy, pixelfed, some other platform) and wants to help fund it exclusively, they can do so. Donating to the general pool would let the organization allocate funds as needed.

The donation platforms already support that, so it's a matter of making sure that our accounts/accounting is set up in a way that we don't lose track of where people wanted their money to go

  • Copying my comment for the second bit

I appreciate that people are asking about this since we want to future-proof things as much as possible. Being vigilant is a good thing :)

As for our plans around that, what I'm thinking is

    • we can be transparent about everything that is going on, and publicly share as much as possible, so that people can look for issues with this organization
    • overtime if we can set up more guides about what we learned and how we're set up, and open source technical things that we make ourselves, so that it'll be easier for new organizations and instances to pop up

  • My understanding is that

    • the terms are interchangeable in Canada
    • the official term is not-for-profit, which is a separate distinction from 'charity'

We do not have charity registration, as there are strict requirements on what purposes qualify, and so we can't issue tax receipts.

We have some written out here, and we can clarify further or make it consistent across the site

    https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/fedecan/faq#_1-what-does-it-mean-to-be-an-incorporated-not-for-profit-organization

    https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/fedecan/faq#_2-why-are-you-not-a-registered-charity

I'll reach out to some people to clarify the exact wording on this. The legal websites I've come across are inconsistent
