The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP or DOTROIP[1]) is a legally non-binding United Nations resolution passed by the United Nations in 2007 that delineates and defines the individual and collective rights of indigenous peoples, including their ownership rights, cultural and ceremonial expression, identity, language, employment, health, education, and other issues. Their ownership also extends to the protection of their Indigenous intellectual property.[2] The declaration "emphasizes the rights of Indigenous peoples to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions, and to pursue their development in keeping with their own needs and aspirations."[3] It "prohibits discrimination against indigenous peoples and promotes their full and effective participation in all matters that concern them, and their right to remain distinct and to pursue their own visions of economic and social development"

    Excerpt from the article:

Carney opened Friday's forum by reiterating a commitment to reconciliation, and admitted that there is much more to do on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) Act and its action plan, the calls for justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action.

UNDRIP is a human rights instrument that acknowledges Indigenous Peoples have the right to give or withhold consent for projects that impact them. The Conservatives have opposed this policy as a "veto," while the Liberals passed legislation in 2021 requiring federal laws be harmonized with UNDRIP.

  • Looks cool, you should definitely build the community the way you want to!

It's sometimes easier to build up an existing community that already has a number of subscribers but could use more love and attention. Of course you can also cross post to and from that other community if you'd prefer to grow a new one.

In this case, I'm thinking of !learn_programming@programming.dev. If you wanted to, you could reach out and offer to help moderate

  • Well TIL

    https://manoa.hawaii.edu/exploringourfluidearth/physical/coastal-interactions/beaches-and-sand/weird-science-parrotfish-and-sand

Scientists estimate that up to 70% of the sand on white sandy beaches in the Caribbean and Hawaiβ€˜i has been excreted by parrotfish. A large adult parrotfish can excrete over a ton of sand per year. Areas that have parrotfish produce more sand than similar areas with few or no parrotfish. This sediment production rate is especially important in areas like Hawaiβ€˜i, where there is little terrestrial input, and almost all of the sand is of biogenic origin.

  • Man, you guys really get upset and uncivil just because somebody said they don't like tattoos

No, the downvotes are because you said

    I'm honestly ok with this

It's fine to not like tattoos. Other people in this thread have also said that they also don't like tattoos, but they're not being downvoted. You're the one arguing in bad faith here.

There's always been healthy discussion online about people not liking tattoos, regretting a particular one, discussing the costs of removal, and discouraging others. There's no conspiracy pushing for one side over the other. What people do agree on is that detention based on the presence of tattoos alone, is wrong.

  • What is this little guy, is that a vole?

  • Hi, this post is being reported.

Can you include a comment about the article, how it is relevant to the community to kick off some more discussion? I would do it myself, and I see that it relates to our election, but since you're the author it would be better coming from you. Thank you!

  • I'm good with that too. A pinned post and sidebar list should help people know where to share content.

  • Since there are many great answers already, thinking of other different ideas

Does shaking the box help? In which case it's possible something separated

  • I know it's super expensive, but if I had to guess thats based on population?

This depends a lot on location. Some parts of Vancouver/ Toronto are expensive, some cities are cheaper

    1. I've got 12 years experience doing software development, Devops, system engineering, device engineering, with a BA in Computer Engineering. Are there certain companies to avoid? Certain companies/locations to check out? Salary isn't nearly as important as being able to afford living.

I'll wait for someone else to answer this.

I know some French and I am working on more. Is this helpful?

It could be helpful for roles in or adjacent to government, but it's not required for most jobs and especially in tech. If you live in a French speaking region, then it will be helpful for day to day life

Also, I need a bit of a kickstart to understanding the political landscape. We'll start with I'm pro-choice, an Ally, anti-gun, support democracy and love the ranked choice system, and subsidized healthcare. Taxes and the government work for the people.

Here are the positions of each of the federal parties on some key issues this election.

    1. Work commutes? I've done hour long commutes, I've done bus commutes, Ive walked to work, driven, and remote, just need to know what to expect.

It depends on the city and where you work. Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal have decent public transit

    1. I already say sorry for everything, any other cultural norms I should know about?

You sound reasonable and so I wouldn't worry.

For what it's worth, you'll sometimes hear people compare America's "melting pot" to Canada's "mixed salad" or "patchwork quilt". How true that is in practice is up for discussion, but the idea is that Canada has many parts coming together to make a whole, while still being distinguishable by the unique elements. There isn't the expectation for newcomers to shed their old culture and become purely " "Canadian" ".

  • I agree, at our current moderation capacity it would lead to inconsistent moderation and arguments about where the 'quality threshold' is

Encouraging people to post better quality sources through comments might be better than fully restricting the posts?

  • I've prepped one here. @Bitswap@lemmy.world, how does this look? I simplified the rules somewhat by combining related rules. Also I don't think the astronomy picture of the day was working so I removed it and kept the link
