I just don't understand the part where we're somehow being "unfair" to the US.

Same here. Personally, I'm also going to buy as little from the US as I can for the next while. Same as last time.

I agree. It's like Occam's Razor, but with stupidity instead of simplicity: the most stupid reason is the most likely.

I think my problem, as I've come to understand it, is not only that I want to be well informed so much as I'm also trying to "square the circle." I'm trying to make sense of things that are happening in the world that don't make sense.
