  • Gonna have to empty the rubbish bins to make room for more busted umbrellas 🤣

  • Let's talk Sydney! Week of June 30 2025
  • BigW toy sale!

I've got my eye on an expensive (for me) electronic gadget that I probably don't really need, but that's hanging on the Amazon Prime Day sales which are apparently July 8 to July 14, 2025.

  • Fruit stickers are annoying and bad for the environment. So why did an Australian ban come unstuck?
  • I always assumed stickers were there for marketing/branding purposes.

It always made me laugh because:
    a) I coudn't tell you the name of any of those brands, so that doesn't work.
    b) I buy whatever fruit is at the shop. I can't go searching for XYZ brand of apples lol

  • Let's talk Sydney! Week of June 30 2025
  • Happy EOFY!

Also, weather could be wild tomorrow/Wed. Be careful out there.

  • Fairphone announces the €599 Fairphone 6, with a 6.31" 120Hz LTPO OLED display, a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chip, and enhanced modularity with 12 swappable parts
  • Can you show an example of one from 3 years ago?

Because my experience was that most ROMs were based on AOSP/ LineageOS , which supports very few Samsung phones, and no flagships since the 2018 S10.

And even of those, many didn't support IMS/VoLTE/VoWiFi which made them useless in any geos that didn't have 3G fallback for voice. You can't make or receive phone calls.

  • Large apartments are a solution to Australia's housing crisis
  • And the sub that got me to post says "The golden unicorn of homes that could solve the housing crisis"

    No. No single thing will.

  • Large apartments are a solution to Australia's housing crisis
  • Oh, another silver bullet?

They are a part of a solution. Multiple policies are required on both the demand side and the supply side.

  • Electric vehicle myths: almost half of Australians wrongly believe EVs are more likely to catch fire, survey shows
  • The best info I've seen are a couple of studies out of Europe that showed ICE (gas/petrol) cars were at least 10 to 20 times more likely to catch on fire than EVs.

And the info I've seen on hybrid cars said they were at least twice as likely to catch fire as ICE cars.

    A simple search provides this.

  • Most storage types are subject to bitrot.

DVDs appear to be the cheapest form of long lived media. Some are rated for 50 years, and life can be from 30 to 100 years

M-Disc is a newer optical format that claims 1000 years, but is pretty pricey.

  • Anthropologist uncovers the 11,000-year history of avocado domestication
  • My favourite avocado story I heard was that avocados relied on megafauna to distribute their seeds.

Yep, they were big enough to eat them and poop the seeds out 😆

  • Anybody that cares about this has already made their choices long ago.

  • Beans and rice - how would you spice it up?
  • Along those lines, I think this Jamaican Mackeral & Rice recipe, which uses an all purpose seasoning (AllSpice?), would go well with just switching the beans in for the mackerel.

You could substitute or skip any of the ingredients you don't have handy. I think I used some diced tomatoes instead of using up all my tomato sauce, a little cinammon and nutmeg for the pimento berries, and instead of the scotch bonnet, I just used some hot sauce.

Simple, tasty, fast & pretty darn cheap too!

  • I disappeared off TV screens seeking a different life. Here's what I found
  • I have mixed feelings about this.

There is probably a lot of truth to what Stan says, and perhaps a lot of wisdom in the quotes he has chosen.

But most people simply cannot devote the time to contemplate such matters. They're spending all their time simply trying to battle the lower rungs of Maslow's hierarchy

It does kinda remind me of something I was thinking the other day. People spend hours at the gym/exercising/sport working on their physical wellbeing, but do they spend any time on improving their mind? Or, perhaps beyond that, on challenging or improving their 'spiritual' understanding? It seemed to me that, at a surface level, there seems to be a big imbalance to the physical. And maybe I also should think and plan to balance more on the other two. If I could spend less time on the bottom tiers of Maslow's hierarchy, maybe I'd have more time to spend at the top?

Anyways, I'm glad Stan seems to be finding some peace.

  • Research has revealed there are not one, but four different bluebottle species.
  • They have been named:

    • fuck
    • THE FUCK?
    • FUCK ME! OH FUCK! OH FUCK YOU, YOU LITTLE CUNT!

    and....

    • beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

These are the scientific names, and may be quite difficult for anyone not Australian to understand or pronounce.

  • Australia’s first lab-grown meat will be on menus within weeks
  • I'm for lab grown meat, but as we transition to it, somebody will have to get rid of all those extra cows, pigs, chickens etc, and I will make the sacrifice and volunteer to help do it, one steak, chop, sausage and wing at a time.

Perhaps I would call it a Daily Supply Charge.

    7 Plus lol

It's hysterical that I can't watch the main cricket channel on 7plus. I just get the red circle going round and round.

But if I switch to the Hindi channel, it's perfect.

Needless to say, with India at 6/73, the Hindi commentators are a little subdued, but still make more sense than Ponting and co.

    CrowdStrike impact on aussie.zone?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered previously, but it just struck me that I hadn't really noticed any impacts of CloudStrike on aussie.zone.

Was wondering if it was a non-event, or maybe there are some war stories with heroes deserving medals!

I use old.reddit.com, and had trouble logging in from there today. "Too many redirects". I also use the Redirect to old.reddit.com extension. When I disabled that, the login link it now takes you to is https://www.reddit.com/login/. That, of course, takes you to www.reddit.com.

The old 'popup' login box has been removed. I also noticed that the in sub logins where they used to have username/password entry boxes have been removed.

Small modular nuclear reactor that was hailed by Coalition as future cancelled due to rising costs

So, it appears the first SMR project in the US was scrapped due to rising costs.

An Aussie SMR would take 10-15 years before even being online and we'd be the guinea pigs.

Perhaps it's time to pivot to technology already available and that can be implemented in the short term?
