stock market
  • I think you missed three facts that I keep trying to hammer home.

    1. I genuinely don't care enough to do research and spend time watching the markets. I'm fortunate to have more money than time these days so $750 is worth vastly less than me doing it myself.
    2. It's safer. This is a huge % of my life savings were talking about. I don't trust myself to do it.
    3. I don't care. At all. In any capacity.

  • Ah yes there is no such thing as experience or knowledge in financials!

I'm in IT and it's the same way! Throw on an LTT playlist and by the end of the day you'll be a sys admin!

  • THEY want to make money

Yes, but they make money when I make money. I pay like $750 per year to keep my account open, but other than that he only takes a percentage of my monthly gains. The more money he makes me, the more money he gets from me.

And yes of course I could do enough research to match or very them in gains and I could spend enough time watching the markets to make sure I am making sound decisions. Or I could just pay someone a few hundred bucks a month to do it for me. I know what decision I chose.

  • So I do actually have a high interest account from Capital One it's very nice. But yeah there's a bunch of rules like minimum monthly deposits and it takes up to 5 business days to transfer money out of it. And because y'all are assuming, I also have a 401k and HSA maxed out, and a Roth IRA I put some money in each month.

But yeah I intentionally left out a lot because I am not a financial expert, which is the reason why I went with a broker anyways. But here are the answers for your questions

    • I have a broker through JP Morgan. I don't know the guy and don't talk to him outside of the once a month he calls me to update me on what's going on.
    • I don't know what stocks he is trading and I don't care. Every once and a while I'll ask him to invest in something I think would be good like Nvidia or AMD but by the time I hear about something he already moved money around
    • Of course he is working for the company and not me. I am not that wealthy haha
    • He consistently makes me 4-6% gains which is plenty for me.

  • Hi so I am actually maxing out a 401k and HSA, I have a IRA too but I only put a little bit into it. I also have a high interest savings account which is very nice.

But this is my long term savings and retirement. I don't trust myself enough for that and I've made 4-6% gains consistently since I started. Significantly better than I would be able to do (I know because I've tried with smaller amounts) plus I don't have to worry or think about it.

  • Actually just avoid the stock market entirely and pay someone else to manage your money.

I just have an account that I deposit money to every week when I get paid (actually it's automatically deducted) and never think about it.

Edit: of course make sure you have your 401k, HSA, and IRA accounts maxed out people. I didn't think I was going to have to say this but oh well. And high interest savings accounts are nicer and less risky. Do all of those things then get a broker to manage the rest of your money.

  • me irl
  • So in Chinese traditions "10000" is just a stand in for "really big number". Kind of like how, at least here in the states, well say "there's a million of them". Not that there is literally 1,000,000 of the thing, but more there is just a lot of them.

  • What sort of grill needs a firmware update lol
  • My dad's smoker is also able to set key frames so you can have it ramp up or down in temp at various points while cooking. And it can either be set to change temp at a time or when one of the probes reaches a certain temp. Plus he really likes being able to monitor it from his iPad, especially in the winter or if he has to run up to the store real quick.

  • there is a remote controlled ai agent on every google device that can not be turned off
  • Does it support banking apps yet? Last time I tried it anything to do with financials, Bitwarden, or 2FA just didn't work at all.

Edit: and I've heard you can get Google play store on it now right? Cause I'll need all of my apps back

  • The Trump administration has made drastic cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that threaten to impact weather forecasting (headline from four months ago)
  • Hell even if they were an actual adult who very much voted the wrong way and fully drank the cool aid, death is not okay and seeing people online celebrate it because they're "the bad guys" kinda makes me sick.

One of the reasons I got off reddit was any time a video from Ukraine came up the comments were just full of insults and jokes about the Russian soldier who died. And yeah, there is no redeeming qualities of Russia invading Ukraine and they could stop the war just as easily as they started it, but come on guys. That's some guy, a guy who had family and friends and desires and dislikes and now he's dying a slow and painful death in a field somewhere.

You can not like the "other side" but you gotta hold onto your humanity.

  • YouTube Music Downloader

Hey guys i have been using Navidrome to stream my music from my server and its been amazing. I primarily use YT Music because of discoverability so I have all of my "primary" playlists (about 8 of them really, but supporting a somewhat arbitrary limit would be nice) in YouTube.

Im looking for an automated way to download the music and keep my navidrome instance updated with a couple playlists. I started working on some Python script to handle it, but its just not working super well so i would prefer to use someone elses solution haha.

Anyone have any good recommendations? I tried this one but I couldn't actually find the music and it seems to only support one playlist at a time. It would also be nice to download the album art and set some ID3 tags too

    Actually right leaning communities?

Hey guys one of the things I miss about reddit is communities like r/Conservative or r/conspiracy, not because I agree with really anything they say there, but because it's a challenge for me.

It's really easy to say "no you're dumb and wrong", but I like going down rabbit holes so I will take the bat shit insane stuff they say and find actual sources to refute them. I know it won't actually change any minds but it's fun for me.

I know theres @conservative@lemm.ee but that is basically just non-conservatives making fun of conservatives. And I have not been able to find any good conspiracy theory communities on Lemmy at all.

    Any advice?

What are your favorite Sunday night dinners?

I tend to have some more free time on Sundays so I was hoping to start making some nicer and fancier diners.

I'd say I would have about 90 minutes or so that I could dedicate to prep time (or if it needs prepped the night before like a marinade that's fine too) and pretty much as long as it needs for cooking too.

What's your favorite meal to make on your weekends?

    Custom Feeds

I used to use Boost for Reddit and one of my favorite features was the custom Feeds.

Is there any plans to bring those back? Or am I just missing it?

Looking for a good RSS Reader

Hello all, I am looking to start getting back into RSS feeds but nothing Ive found so far matches all of my requirements so i was going to see if you guys had any advice.

    My requirements are:

    • Self hosted (preferably with an official docker container)
    • I should be able to view it in the web, as well as with an Android app but it doesn't have to be a first party app
    • It has to look nice and modern, preferably with a dark mode option

Anything you guys know of that would meet all three of those things?

Currently my plan is to run FreshRSS as my aggregator and FeedMe or Focus Reader on Android. I don't really have any plans for web viewers though
