Linux distros good for hosting Plex/jelly
  • I use NixOS for all my systems now, single config covers two servers, laptop, notebook and desktop.

Containers aren't something to be afraid of, I've found nix + podman to be super easy to use / configure, so much it's a copy / paste a config from another container with some small directory changes.

If you are not someone who likes using a terminal perhaps nix isn't for you. I've found forcing the terminal & configuring via nix has given me much more insight into my machines / os than ever before. If you've got the time to mess with Nix I'd recommend it.

If that sounds like a bunch of effort and time to get something that may be easier via another method, I'd say Proxmox is the way to go.

Running through my config I've just noticed that I've got an IP conflict that I wasn't aware of, but makes total sense right now 😅

  • The hunt for the most efficient heat pump in the world
  • My wall mounted split systems were <$1000 AUD each, 3.5kw. Found a sparkie and a fridgie to do the install, set us back around $3000 for two systems installed.

Great units, added some wifi dongles and tied them into my home-assistant for remote / out of home control & scheduling.

Probably the best addition to our home currently, don't know how we lived here using pedestal fans and gas heating.

  • This was a surprisingly high effort shitpost
  • I wanted to get more ram for my notebook however it's soldered to the board with no extra DIMM or storage options.

It's an old satellite from Toshiba, 4gb ram, dual core intel, 64gb emmc. Serves it's purpose running a bare bones (ish) install of Nix.

    Really hate ewaste hardware.

  • Can a System Handle Brown/Blackouts on only the GPU?
  • Yeah NUT is the package I've been looking at, and looks decently integrated into NixOS just, getting around to configuring it is another time sink.

My 1920R and an unused 15A Dell rackmount (h967n maybe) came with my rack, I've got no reason to have two UPS running nor do I want to replace the batteries in another UPS or have a 15A socket installed in the house just yet. But man it's tempting to piggy-back it off the 1920R for shits and giggles.

Waiting on some parts to arrive from AliExpress - once they arrive I'll be able to decommission one of my servers and have all my services running off one board.

  • Can a System Handle Brown/Blackouts on only the GPU?
  • I've wanted to implement something like that with my 1920R UPS for my rack but haven't found the time to commit to antiquated hardware.

Was enough of a hassle dealing with the expired SSL certs on the management card yet getting software running on one of my machines to communicate with the UPS.

All things considered my two servers chilling chew around 60w on average, not taking into account my POE cameras or other devices. The UPS should run for over a day without getting close to draining its batteries (have a half populated ebm too).

  • This shit should be illegal
  • Honestly looks like the carton was in the sun letting them sag like that, the "air" in the bag is probably nitrogen or another gas to help keep them shelf stable. It will also help protect them during shipping keeping the bag rigid.

Story about the sun, we had cartons of ddr4 sitting in the Western Australia sun during CV19, not for a long duration of time. When we unpacked the plastic clamshells were warped, some to the point where the modules were escaping the packaging. No damage to the products, just an annoyance.

  • XWayland 24.1 Released With Explicit Sync, Better Rootful Experience
  • Oh man, brings me back to blackbox / xoblite on my old XP machine.

I remember using notepad to change the config files, no auto formatting or error checking.

Had no idea what I wanted out of it but I loved the minimal aesthetic.

  • ‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services
  • From my nixos config.

Corps are fucked, I've got no issues pirating content. If I want to support someone I'll pay up but the majority of content is background filler for me.

Why would I want to sub to Amazon just to watch Jeremy Clarkson's new show, where he was paid $200m to support him? It baffles the mind the volume of cash that's thrown around in that world.

I'd much rather spend my money down the pub on a Sunday, which is owned by locals, has local beers on tap with a local solo musician jamming out the front.

For me, there's much more value in an experience with the quirks of it being live, a quick witted bartender, a great cover, an old bloke retelling stories he's told 100 times before, a forgotten lyric or even a snapped string on a guitar.

Or I'm starting to show my age 😎

  • Report: Microsoft to face antitrust case over Teams
  • We used Teams at the last org I worked at, we rarely had issues. The UI wasn't bad in my eyes, we had integrated our phone system into teams too. Calling someone on the other side of the country via teams was simple.

Admittedly the service did get worse before I left and there were a couple of Microsoft outages which cut all our text based communications for a day (phone system still worked)

I'm using slack right now but would prefer something self-hosted but that's well out of the scope of the current mob I'm with.
