I grew up upper-middle class and have largely the same philosophy. Always thought my friends’ parents were idiots for buying these gas guzzling Ford/Chevy monstrosities just to haul around 1-2 kids and a dog on occasion. Regular salaried people spending/financing more than half their annual income every few years on cars they don’t need just to keep up with the Joneses who don’t really care in the first place.
I don’t skimp on quality when I buy something, but I only buy what I actually need and if something serves its purpose, I hold onto it for as long as it works. My wife and I do very well now, but aside from living in a fairly nice neighborhood with great public schools and amenities, you wouldn’t think it from the cars we drive and the way we dress.
To your first paragraph, I would say it still doesn’t make a lot of sense. I do think your average conservative benefits from conservative rulemaking/enforcement in a “sundown town,” look-the-other-way-if-you’re-one-of-us sort of microcosm, but when you look at the effects of conservative policymaking on a macro-social and -economic level, it’s clear that middle-Americans are still getting a worse deal than they would under more progressive regimes.
Wtf, I thought that was just me. Although it happens less ever since I lost some weight, so my guess is it’s BP related.
My hot take is that this is practically irrelevant for the vast majority of desktop users, even hobbyists. Unless you have an absolute rats’ nest of cables inside the case or you are overclocking the chip close to its thermal limits, your chip should run just fine with a small form factor heatsink/fan, which an older, non-enthusiast case should have no problem fitting. As one data point, I’m cooling my CPU with a Noctua NH-D15 inside my Antec Three Hundred. A somewhat tight fit? Maybe, but certainly no performance issues.
Yeah, I’m not sure what would make a case obsolete other than not physically fitting your hardware. I’m using a janky mid-2000s Antec case to hold my i7-9700k / RTX 2070 build with no problems (although I fully expect to need a bigger case for any future GPU upgrades).
This works out really well for upper management. They know full well that you know that your team lead doesn’t make the decision to understaff, which they hope will guilt their contributors into staying instead of piling more shit on the blameless boss’s plate when they leave.
Getting out of Macomb County was the best decision I made in a long time. Although I won’t pretend Oakland is much better outside of like 4 cities.
I might be late to the party, but I saw this band last week for the first time after hearing almost nothing of theirs before (went mostly for their co-headliner Alex G), and WOW - what a performance. Their latest record has been living rent-free in my head ever since. I haven't been this blown away by an indie pop record in years, maybe since Beach House's Bloom. From start to heartbreaking finish, not a minute wasted. I recommend a listen.

The only thing baffling about any of this is that somehow, millions of ordinary, working/middle-class Americans believe that this system benefits them more than the alternative.
I love Tidal for the audio quality and have no plans to go back to Spotify (unless they release a competitive hi-fi service). That said, the Tidal app (UI design, error frequency, AC/AA integration, etc) is not as polished and well-made as something like Spotify, and the lack of unification between playback on different devices was a bit of a letdown at first (I.e., you can play different tracks on different devices at the same time; you can’t use your phone as a remote control for playback on your desktop app).
It’s absurd that employers in legalized states are allowed to fire/refuse to hire candidates/employees based on the contents of their urine/hair/other bodily substances when impairment on the job or illegal use isn’t in question. Federal legalization will hopefully put a nail in that coffin, at least for practical purposes.
