  • We also have experimental data showing that LLMs work harder when you threaten them. Maybe they’re just copying the human tendency to work harder when threatened, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Also, when you dial down their capacity to deceive they start telling you they're consciouss.

  • By consciousness I mean the fact of experience - that it is like something to be, that experience has qualia.

Things like memory, morality, biological goals, learning, intelligence, etc. that you listed there may be related, but they don't need to be. It's conceivable that we could create a very simple system that doesn't seem to do much but by happenstance it processes information in a way that some level of consciousness emerges and it is like something to be that system. In the worst case we remain completely unaware of that and this thing is suffering immensely while we just keep "mistreating" it because we don't know better. We effectively created hell and populated it.

  • But at the end of the day there’s no “experiencing” in this mathematical process.

How could you know? Consciousness is entirely a subjective experience. There's no evidence of it anywhere else in the universe, so it seems baseless to make absolute claims about one thing being conscious and another not. You could reduce what the human brain does to something akin to a mathematical process too - it's just neurons firing in the correct order. To me it seems that the only thing I can be certain of is that I'm conscious myself - whatever that self is - but I can't make the same claim even of other people. I assume they're conscious like me and they claim to be but I can't be absolutely sure of it.

  • Humans are consciouss, yet we too confidently spread false information constantly and it would be just as naive to blindly trust information only because it's coming from a human.

Also, we can't measure consciousness so claiming that LLM either is or isn't consciouss is equally baseless - we simply can't know and are only making assumptions that could one day turn out to be false.

  • My point is that you seem to be presenting ads as the only other option, but it's not - there are other ways to cover the cost ranging from financing it all yourself to making it subscription-based and everything in between. I don't even necessarily disagree with your core idea but I want to highlight that there are creative ways to go about it rather than just defaulting to ads. As an extreme example, I'm a paying member of a community that's subscription-based but anyone can just message the staff and get a year for free for whatever reason if they don't want to pay, and they can do it again the next year if they want to. They're handing out a crazy amount of free subscriptions but that doesn't matter because there's enough people paying to cover the costs.

  • I'd be curious to hear your reasoning on why you think it's not inevitable because in my view it absolutely is, assuming that we don't destroy ourselves before we get there.

Intelligence seems to be what explains why we're the dominant species on the planet. It's our most valuable asset and more of it always seems desirable. Every incentive we have points toward building more intelligent systems, and I don't see us stopping. It might take a long time, but for as long as we keep improving the systems we'll get there eventually. Creating an actual AGI would be the most powerful human invention ever - and also the last one - so in my view there's no stopping. We'll chase that for as long as it takes no matter the consequences. The payoff is just too great not to go after.

  • The city I live in only has 100k residents but there's an underground parking garage under the marketplace at the dead center of the city and there's always free parking spots there. I rarely even go looking for side of the road parking. Though in NYC it would immediately flood I believe.

  • You seem to be writing only one-sentence responses, so I assume that's how far you read my comment too. You should consider what's being said by taking in the full context. If you can't make it beyond the first sentence, then don't even respond. This grandstanding of yours is completely uncalled for.

  • I do quite a bit of unauthorized trail maintenance. I guess helping other people is a big motivation for it but it's not like I get any credit for it as nobody is there to see me do it. It's just something I do because I then feel good about having done it.

  • I don't consider work separate from life. I wasn't happy in my previous job so I started my own bussiness and now I do what I like to do. I still wouldn't work if I didn't have to but because I do, might as well do something that I enjoy and feels meaningful. Admittedly I probably work more hours now than I did before and I took a paycut as well but for as long as it covers my expenses it's all good. Atleast I don't need to ask anyone's permission for.. anything.
