  • Social media isn't real life. As with many other things, it's the loud minority online who make it seem like they're the majority. People who like AI don't feel the need to declare it online. Neither do the ones with a neutral view on it, but the haters must let everyone else know that they're on the right side of history and better than everyone else who disagrees with them.

These are usually the kind of people who, when you ask what they're passionate about, just start listing things they don't like. Most of Lemmy is like that. There's very little talk about what people are into, but no shortage of grandstanding on what they oppose.

  • Virtually every single time I start designing something in sketchup I realize that the way I planned it in my head wouldn't have worked. I'll much rather make that mistake then than once I'm fitting the parts together. The accuracy you can get this way is also quite amazing. When I check the final measurements once I'm done I'm usually off by few millimeters at most.

  • Yeah it's quite a bit of work. I don't think I'd have the heart to actually shoot this even if I did have a bow. I put way too much effort into it. They recommend making these in batches of 5 if you're actually intending to use them too. This is more of a proof of concept.

  • No, it doesn't. This place becomes barely tolerable once you spend a completely unreasonable amount of time and effort curating toxicity out of your feed. I just don't think there's fixing it when it's a foundational problem. It's tribalism, grandstanding, virtue signaling, groupthink, and outrage. It's not "let's explore an idea" but rather "look at everything that's wrong with the world and how these people are the problem."

It's a self-selected group of people loosely tied together by the mutual hatred of an outgroup. That's the only common thread.

Contrasting the two discussion-based platforms I spend my time on and how one just works and the other is Lemmy, I've come to the conclusion that the only way to build a platform like this that the users don't regret having gone to is by having it paywalled behind a monthly subscription and making indecency a ban-worthy offense - and actually enforcing it. When it's a free-for-all like this, there's no incentive to not shit where you eat.

  • I'm a mountain biker and judging by my exposure to other mountain bikers I'd say many of them would claim that I ride the wrong kind of bike (e-assist FatBike) and I wear the wrong kind of gear (hiking clothes, combat boots and a heavy backpack)

  • As I said, feel free to disagree but at least disagree with their actual point - not your interpretation of it.

It's unclear to me what your personal opinion on pickup trucks has to do with any of this. I'm talking about fairly representing people's views. I don't know what it is you seem to take issue with.

  • That's not what the guy is complaining about. It's a perfectly valid point that with a longer vehicle you have to cut into the oncoming lane or your rear tires will hit the curb.

Feel free to criticize people you disagree with, but at the very least you should criticize what they're actually saying rather than your unfair interpretation of it.

  • Who I bought the house from told me to look after one specific plant that she said she would've taken with her if she could've. It got crushed by the weight of snow the next winter and there was nothing but a stick left.
