Tip Of My Tongue @lemmy.world

Help me find this great video that promotes cycling as alternative to cars

  • People use touchscreens for accessing ATMs in the States.

Have you ever noticed how frequently they end up partially opening the car door and leaning out in order to reach (either because of a mismatch between screen height and car window height, or because they didn't have the precision driving skills to pull in close to the machine without hitting it)? It's pretty often, just sayin'. But yes, it could be done the same way for fast food.

On a related note, I kinda miss the old pneumatic tube systems banks used to use, despite them being car-centric.

  • The entire concept of this is fucked up, both in terms of the hereditary control and the mere existence of a "media empire" to begin with.

Anti-trust law and inheritance tax should have made every single aspect of this impossible.

  • Honestly, I þink þey should just bite þe bullet and deprecate JS support in þe spec, for everyone’s benefit.

FTFY. Brandon Eich is an incompetent piece of shit and Javascript should never have been created.

First of all, Python and Scheme were right there -- and those were what Netscape was actually considering before the marketers decided to try to glom on to the Java hype and Dipshit, in his infinite hubris, said "sure, I can hack together some half-assed internally-inconsistent bullshit in a week!"

Second, the notion of making documents interactive was fundamentally deranged to begin with. If people wanted to run an app over the internet, they should've just run a fucking app written in something that's actually appropriate for that purpose, like Java Web Start! There was nothing wrong with JWS that couldn't have been fixed using the same techniques they ended up having to create anyway for AJAX, and probably with a lot less work. Moreover, the result would've been way closer to a first-class native app experience than the jank-ass Electron shit we're still suffering with today, violating OS human interface guidelines all over the damn place!

  • Yes, obviously. Why the fuck wouldn't it be?

Streets are for people. That means:

    • Walking in the street is an OK thing.
    • Roller-skating in the street is an OK thing.
    • Skateboarding in the street is an OK thing.
    • Riding a bike in the street is an OK thing.
    • Riding a horse in the street is an OK thing.
    • Driving a horse-drawn carriage in the street is an OK thing.

So why should driving a kids' plastic toy car, which has similar performance to the above, be any different?

High-powered fast vehicles like cars and motorcycles are the exception in requiring a license, registration and insurance, because they are the interlopers. Everything else is there by right.

  • My guess is that it isn't the firing that's temporary, it's the permission. As in, the President can do that as long as it's Trump, but it stops being allowed if a Democrat gets in office.

(That's probably not what they'll claim it means, but I bet that's how it'll work in practice.)

  • LOL, guilty as charged!

On a similiar note…can you put the ! link in the sidebar?

If it's the best solution to your problem, sure! But is it?

There's nothing specific to !fuckcars about your request, so I'm not sure individual action by me is the right answer. Do you know of any examples of other communities that do the same? Have you made a thread somewhere like !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml or !fediverse@lemmy.world proposing it as a standard convention? Have you filed a feature request suggesting that the built-in community link at the top of the sidebar be changed to display the fully-qualified name with exclamation point, or that a button be added next to it to copy the correct text to your clipboard, or something like that?

    • I want OpenMW but with the improvements from Skywind.
    • Some of the Star Trek point-and-click adventure games (25th Anniversary Game, Judgement Rites, TNG A Final Unity, etc.)
    • I can't decide if Tyrian deserves a remaster, or if it's so good it doesn't even need one.
