  • It's engagement bait. Wrong on purpose in a mildly amusing way, provokes commentary. That's dollarbucks, baybee

  • That makes sense. If there are plants above, consider framing a bit of them in for the final version, or change the web layout to match what's there. Spiders make do with all sorts of wonky areas, after all!

Again, I really love what you're doing here, I hope you'll post more.

  • I do it out of love, really

  • I love the idea of using negative space this way. It would be amazing if you could add more dimensionality to the background, increase the sense of perspective being the negative space so that the foreground objects create a sense of nearness.

Also, what is the web is attached to? What are the anchor points above? It's unclear if the web is in a window or attached to plants in the garden.

  • Any time I hear "capitalism breeds innovation", I feel like grabbing a chair and swinging it.

  • No, no you're both wrong. Wile. E. Coyote gets a four second trial, guilty as fuck, thrown in jail. Then he spends three minutes going through all the stages of grief, fails to off himself when a cellmate saves his life. He processes his life's struggles, forgives himself! Goes to his own execution totally at peace. That's when he sees Road Runner in the viewing gallery. Totally comes undone, loses his shit at the very end. Meep meep! Runs away, circle out to credits. That's how it's done.

  • I should make a meme template with the first face twice...

    1. You made someone smile. A win is a win.
    2. It's never about you, it's always about them.
    3. See point two, again. The only reason you would have been that funny is if the idea of being that open and unreserved with their kid genuinely freaks them out. They were probably abused.

Edit: I'm open to the "stoned rando" hypothesis as well, hadn't thought of that

  • PE is all about that cash, but they have ways of making money that don't involve strong fundamentals. Direct private ownership, such as with Valve, aligns the owners interests with their customers much more closely.

  • Am I the only one who cruises all/new? It's hardly as if there's too many posts to see everything, and I can hang with all the weirdness.

  • I don't have a backstory or lore, I have mental health issues and sleep debt.

  • My b, similar sounding username and it was just 2 days ago. I have been looking at other servers for about a year now, just lazy and slow.

  • We live in different countries. I left the US because it was driving me crazy, and my heart goes out to you since I know a lot of people feel that way but don't have a viable exit strategy. I've put in a lot of work to stop participating in an empire of slavery and stolen land, moved back to the land of my grandparents (which has its own terrible history, perfect being the enemy of good as we all know).

I'm against all the buckets. The only bucket we're all in is a gravity well, and we need to act like it if we're not going to hate it every minute.

  • We talked about this over the weekend, you're going to need new material. I browse all because I like weird shit.

Is this a fun conversation to have? I'm happy to talk about anything else if you are.

  • I tend to cruise /all

  • That's fantastic. Obviously there are still economic issues at play though, and it might just be the fact that Finland's economy is more fairly structured making it more realistically respond to the economic reality of COVID. It was a massive hit, and the economies that came out looking the healthiest are, imo, the ones that are faking it the hardest and relying on a lot of weird behaviours (further economic disparity, market irrationality, brutal consolidations of power, silencing of dissent, etc) to pull it off. The answer might just be to stay sane, trim the fat where possible, keep quietly rebuilding, and come out of it genuinely healthy while avoiding the booms and busts abroad.

Personally, having come from a more idealized American mindset I like the "New Deal" approach to recessions. A big spend upfront on investments in people, infrastructure, and land improvement will usually pay long-term dividends. I would love to see Finland attempt some version of a Green New Deal, or possibly something towards water purification in anticipation of fresh water scarcity later this century. Build sustainability and resilience to prevent future economic harms would be my advice.

  • Entirely fair - I don't know much in general, but I'm most familiar with the US and UK, where aside from failing to tax the rich, there are general issues with private equity gobbling up all the value in business and real estate. Does that happen in Finland too?

  • Tax. Billionaires.

Out of existence preferably, but at least to the extent that they would have been a century ago.

And if they do clever things to dodge the tax, their assets should be seized and their companies should be rendered to the employees.

  • Humans are situational. That's what makes them interesting and worthwhile. Anything that is the same in every situation has no heart.

I tend to think that you really see what people are made of in a tight spot. In a nice situation, everyone finds it easy to be kind. But even those who rise to a challenge and show true heart only do so when they really believe it is an option. That is the point of having hope.
