Steam is such a good game store
  • Isn't that an issue with the developers of those games? Steam is ultimately just a game library. If the book you check out of that library is only readable on Kindle that's not on Steam lol

  • As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play extra ads when I pause a video
  • I did. They reported $31.5 Billion in revenue for 2023.

Im not finding any concrete report on their expenses, but I did find some best guesses as speculated by users. This reddit thread from 7 years ago, is estimating about $2 billion in expenses.

Let's assume that since this was 7 years ago things have gotten drastically more expensive for YouTube, and throw an additional buffer on top of that since we can't be 100% sure. Let's pentuple their proposed operating costs, and, hell, let's also be VERY generous and say that they keep a work force of 5,000 people who each make.. Let's say $120,000/yr?

That would come out to about $10.6 billion/yr in business expenses. Even if you factor in the payments to top earning YouTubers, those only measure in the 10s of millions... Okay.. Let's be reeeeal generous to YouTube here and assume that this guy from r/theydidthemath 7 years ago was WAY off. Let's assume he was off by half of YouTubers actual expenses. Following our (absolutely ludicrous) estimates of their expenses going up by a factor of 5 and their 5,000 employees averaging out to $120,000/yr salaries; YouTube would still be reporting under $21 billion a year in expenses. That means they are net profit $10 billion a year even with the insanely expensive operating costs we assigned them here.

$10 billion. Let me put that into perspective. 10 million seconds is about 115 days. So 10 million seconds in the past was just about the new Year. 10 billion seconds however was 317 years ago.

This idea that YouTube isn't profitable is equal parts ridiculous and hilarious. I just sat here for 15 minutes waxing accountant at you, but none of that was even necessary. YouTube is a business (technically it's Google but you get the point), if it wasn't profitable, it wouldn't exist. Period.

  • Wizards of the Coast "now talking to lots of partners" about next Baldur's Gate
    1. Old series that has a decent following of mostly niche dedicated fans is left to sit without a new installment for many years.

    2. New title is announced. It's sells gang-busters and flips the community on its head.

    3. Corporate Executives prioritize short term profits and begin planning a quick and easy cash grab. !

    4. Second new installment comes out. It is a shell of the previous title with the soul sucked clean out.

    5. Fans are dissapointed and outside of a small niche following the game series falls into obscurity.

    6. Repeat.

! we are here right now

Look.. Maybe BG4 will be good. But after watching this exact cycle play out over and over again for the past decade I'm not sure how you can expect anything else.

  • Totally immersion breaking
  • Can you though? Like the rules as presented in the books are just:

Snitch caught > get 1000pts > game ends

The only other way to get points is in intervals of what? 10? 25 maybe? Let's assume it's 25 because I can't remember. That means you need to be up 40 fucking goals in order to tie if the other team gets the snitch. And that's assuming your entire team doesn't die from exhaustion seeing as the game doesn't end until the snitch is caught lol

  • How we look at the world as a superior species
  • I'm a Windows user and have bwen for many many years. I recently started learning Linux so I can hopefully one day be competent enough to justify never having to buy Microsoft ^TM branded lube again.

My partner, and much of my friend group, are a Mac users.

I am a programmer so I know many many Linux people.

It is Shocking how accurate this meme is LOL

  • Kentucky senate passes bill granting right to collect child support for fetuses
  • Okay.. Having not actually read the bill in question and only having a cursory understanding of what specifically constitutes a fetus vs an embryo, unborn child (like actively going into labor), etc. this feels like an actually kind of okay thing?

I mean, obviously the removal of a woman's rights to control and administer their own bodies is fucking insane and those supporting it should be treated with nothing shy of the most abject contempt one could muster.. But the way this article is worded makes it sound like the bill will allow women to seek some form of monetary justice from an unwanted pregnancy? Which feels jarringly contrary to the motivations behind the policys that make this bill necessary?

Genuinely asking. Am I missing something? Lol

  • Now let's see Paul Allen's rule
  • I have some opinions about 4, but nothing like the vitriol you feel towards it lol. Could I get an example of some things they removed in your opinion?

My complaints mostly boil down to how mediocre the story, world, and characters are. But I can't think of anything they removed necessarily, just poorly implemented

  • Nintendo sues Switch emulator Yuzu for ‘facilitating piracy at a colossal scale’
  • Oh shit, there's a working open source switch emulator out there? Thanks Nintendo!

Aaaaaaaand downloaded the source code, Windows Installer, and Linux installer. Thanks again Nintendo, I really can't express how thankful I am you brought attention to this!

  • Nick Offerman Slams ‘Homophobic Hate’ Against His ‘The Last of Us’ Episode: ‘It’s Not a Gay Story. It’s a Love Story, You A–hole!’
  • I originally had it downvoted, but you're right, they aren't being directly disrespectful. Besides, saying it was a touching love story first and foremost is evidence enough that OP isn't an asshole, just a human with human opinions. I apologize, and have rescinded my previous judgement.

That being said.. Getting the "heebie jeebies" from watching 2 dudes kiss is a red flag that OP has some deep rooted homophobic views/tendencies, which is absolutely something they need to address in their own time. Maybe not here, on the internet, in front of several thousand schmucks making dick jokes; but if that's how it has to be in order to bring OPs attention to it, then so be it.

I'm all for having your own opinions, but if a same sex couple being romantic grosses you out while a heterosexual couple doesn't, that feels like something you should do some soul searching over lol. OP might be a great person irl, but I do think it's important to recognize your own shortcomings and address them where possible. God knows we all have enough of em

  • rule
  • But if we are talking strictly biologically speaking then we've got two sexes.

Not really though, I mean intersex people kinda disprove that by themselves right? Unless we aren't defining sex by what you have between your legs but instead more of just a genetic makeup, which would mean that the 2 sexes theory is disproven by any of the millions of people who have the "wrong" chromosome pair.

The 2 biological sexes thing works as a very broad generalization but it really doesn't hold up under scrutiny. I used to say the exact same thing until I got a dump truck of examples thrown at me lol

  • Spark notes for Windows -> Linux

    Hiya,

I don't suppose anyone has a good source / 15 minutes and a drive to lecture a Linux noobie on some basic Linux functions or things to read up on?

Perhaps unsurprising given the gestures wildly to everything, but I have been planning to switch over to Linux on my home machine for a long time now and I feel like Microsoft slowly, inexorably, forcing the swap to Win11 is as great an excuse to finally bite the bullet as I'm likely to get.

A bit of background, I am an IT guy with many years of experience in Windows and some small bit in Mac. I am an experienced coder with a good fundamental understanding of Unix environments and how to make systems talk to each other. Im comfortable with deep, technical stuff, but, especially in new systems I have a bit of a hard time with abbreviations and acronyms. So I don't need a whole "Linux for Dummies" as I feel like I have a pretty firm grasp on the basics. I just want to know if there's any convenient tips or tricks to make the transition easier.

For example, I have literally no idea what distro I should use lol. I've spent a while researching but given how customizable it all is, after a while it all kinda just mushed itself into a gray maisma in my brain. I use my home machine almost exclusively for gaming and some light coding projects, but I also want to be able to play around with it and do some independent learning.

I just need a good source that can give me the basics on where and how to translate my knowledge of Windows to insert Linux distro. I know it's a completely new OS so I will need to learn a lot of new things. But at their core computers are computers so some things need to be the same, I'm just not sure what to look for.
