  • Amazing that he hand drew that map! Looks amazing.

  • Tomb Raider IV-V-VI Remastered Collection Set for February 2025 Release
  • Honestly it is. The remaster is beautiful. But the games are very much tank controls at heart. So even though it might feel counter intuitive to use the old tank controls; it definitely is the best way to play these games.

I've tried the modern controls, and it becomes apparent really fast that these games were not made for it. It's clunky and unwieldy at best, and completely illogical and unresponsive at worst.

The tank controls take some getting used to, but if you play Lara's home you can get used to them in peace.

  • Very good! You're doing great. If you want some tips: When you're using verbs in the I/ik form, you should write it singular. Like "komen" in the I/ik form is "kom". Also if something is Dutch it's "Nederlandse" not "Nederlands" like "Nederlandse muziek" and "Nederlandse taal".

Keep going, you're doing great! Even though your choice of music is shit :p

  • Rejoice! Terrifier 4 is officially happening
  • I enjoyed terrifier 1 and 2, although the 2nd installment went a little overboard with fate and supernatural, and it went on a little long. But I still enjoyed it. I am definitely going to watch the 3rd and 4th!

  • Peter Molyneux: a fallen god of game design seeking one final chance
  • Everything was under delivered since the early 90s by Peter. I think het just gets off from the attention. Considering most of the projects were a financial success nonetheless, he probably saw this as a reason to keep doing it.

This really bit him in the end though with godus. A failed god game where he went to kickstarter for money. I guess releasing an under promised game when you ask for money before making it, promising all sorts of things and never delivering it is not really good PR.

  • [Retro Silver] System Shock 2 (1999-08-11)

    cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/18053381

    > Happy 25th anniversary to System Shock 2 (I'm actually a day late, oops!). One of the original Immersive Sims, and precursor to the BioShock series. This has much more RPG elements than BioShock does, and an inventory grid. > > -------------- > > # Wikipeda Synopsis > > System Shock 2 is a 1999 action role-playing survival horror video game designed by Ken Levine and co-developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. Originally intended to be a standalone title, its story was changed during production into a sequel to the 1994 game System Shock. The alterations were made when Electronic Arts—who owned the System Shock franchise rights—signed on as publisher. > > The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first-person combat and exploration. It incorporates role-playing elements, in which the player can develop skills and traits, such as hacking and psionic abilities. > > System Shock 2 was originally released in August 1999 for Microsoft Windows. The game received critical acclaim but failed to meet commercial sales expectations. Many critics later determined that the game was highly influential in subsequent game design, particularly on first-person shooters, and considered it far ahead of its time. It has been included in several "greatest games of all time" lists. In 2007, Irrational Games released a spiritual successor to the System Shock series, titled BioShock, to critical acclaim and strong sales. > > System Shock 2 had been in intellectual property limbo following the closure of Looking Glass Studios. Nightdive Studios were able to secure the rights to the game and the System Shock franchise in 2013 to release an updated version of System Shock 2 for modern operating systems, including for OS X and Linux, and announced plans to release an Enhanced Edition of the game. OtherSide Entertainment announced in 2015 that they had acquired the rights from Nightdive Studios to produce a sequel, System Shock 3, but as of 2020 the rights have since been transferred to Tencent. > > ----------------- > > # Videos > > MandaloreGaming - System Shock 2 Review > > Finntrovert - System Shock 2 - Retrospective / Review > > Ramsker - System Shock 2 is Still A Masterpiece > > Boulder Punch - System Shock 2 Review | An Immersive Sim Classic > > ---------- > > # Links > > IGDB Page > > ! > > ! > > MobyGames Page > > ! > > ! > > ! > > ! > > ---------- > > # About !retrostatus@retrolemmy.com > > This community is for big milestone anniversaries of retro games (15 years or older, every multiple of 5 years). Retrolemmy.com 1 year anniversary!

It happened. Retrolemmy turns 1 as of today, juli 20th.

This year has flown by. But knowing that lemmy only was on 0.18.1 it also feels like such a long time ago. I have learned so much thanks to this site. But still have so, so much to learn.

I want to thank everyone here on retrolemmy and lemmy as a whole for being here. For making this my new home online after the reddit exodos. I want to thank spez (fuck you spez), because without him this amazing place on the internet wouldn't be here. I want to thank @Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com for making time to help out here. I want to thank all the mods on the communities. I want to thank my family, for being patient with me when I broke the page again (and again and again) and spent the evening trying to fix it.

Most of all, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving this place a shot, and being here.

To another year of awesome retro fun!

    Cheers.

    Retrolemmy.com Server upgraded.

    Hello,

The server had some stability issues, so I decided it was time to upgrade. The new server has a few more cores, double the memory and a disk upgrade. (the disk upgrade was not needed, but included in the package, and it can't hurt)

I assume most stability issues have been fixed now. If you notice anything, feel free to contact me here on lemmy or reply to this thread.

    Thank you for your patience!

Monthly online discussion and roundtable podcast featuring one DOS game per episode.

    >You're in a Nazi prison, with a dead guard on the floor in front of you. You take his gun. Now you can fight your way out. This is the exciting premise of 1992's Wolfenstein 3D, developed by id Software and published as shareware by Apogee. > >Now we all know Wolfenstein 3D was not the first FPS game ever made, or the first FPS id Software made, or even the first Wolfenstein game. But it's definitely one of the most foundational games for the first-person shooter genre, so all the more reason for us to finally check this one out for March, which is when we try to do a big blockbuster FPS game every year. > >We have two guests joining Martijn ("Tijn") and Florian ("rnlf") for this episode. First of all long-time DGC veteral Bjorn ("TigerQuoll"), who not only joined the discussion on the forums for this month, but who also made a Wolfenstein 3D level pack for us all to enjoy! See the links below to get these. Also joining is first-time podcast participant Jake, for whom Wolfenstein 3D is one of their favourite games ever. > >We also got two voice messages, one by watchful and one by Albrot. Thanks a lot for those! Also many thanks to DGC member console, who helped us again to edit this episode. All your support is much appreciated, we couldn't make this show without it. > >Enjoy!

[SOLVED] Postgres using a lot of CPU since update

EDIT: It seems to have been fixed thanks to @graycube@lemmy.world. Running analyze verbose; in postgres.

After updating to 0.19.5 from 0.19.3 my postgres is often using up 500%+ of CPU according to docker stats and often going to 100% CPU on most cores according to htop. Also noticed in the uptime monitor: !

htop shows one of the 5 postgres processes constantly on UPDATE. I think this might be part of the problem.

I'm not comfortable with postgres and am honestly completely in the dark how or where to mitigate or even pinpoint this issue.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Retrolemmy.com updated to 0.19.5

We updated to 0.19.5. This was not as smooth as I had hoped, and due to that the page was offline for almost a day while I had to troubleshoot and figure out what went wrong.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. But as far as I know, we are fully operational.

If there are any other problems, please let me know by sending me a private message, or putting it in the comments under here.

    Thanks for your patience.

[Retro Silver] Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike (1999-05-12)

Happy 25th anniversary to the final version of Street Fighter III!

This game perfected the 2D tournament fighter genre, after first getting the crown with Street Fighter II. The advanced combo system and gameplay, smooth and detailed 2D sprite animation, and player roster size made this a fan favorite of the series.

    Wikipedia Synopsis

    !

"Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - Fight for the Future"|ストリートファイターIII サードストライク ファイト・フォー・ザ・フューチャー is a 2D fighting game developed and published by Capcom, originally released in 1999 for the arcades and in 2000 for the Dreamcast. [Retro Platinum] King's Quest: Quest for the Crown (1984-05-10)

    cross-posted from: https://retrolemmy.com/post/6261478

Happy 40th anniversary to the first game in the King's Quest series, one of the first graphical adventure games, and where Sierra really made their name.

This game also kicked off the Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI) engine, which Sierra used for many games. Wikipedia says: They employed it in 14 of their games between 1984 and 1989, before replacing it with a more sophisticated engine, Sierra's Creative Interpreter. There's no Wikipedia article for the SCI engine, but I know it was used in Phantasmagoria and Shivers, here is the ScummVM wiki page for SCI instead.

    Wikipedia Synopsis

    !

King's Quest: Quest for the Crown is an adventure game developed by Sierra On-Line and published originally for the IBM PCjr in 1984 and later for several other systems between 1984 and 1989. The game was originally titled King's Quest; the subtitle was added to the games box art in the 1987 re-release, but did not appear in the game.

It is the first official part of the long King's Quest series (not counting 1980's Wizard and the Princess), in which a young knight, Sir Graham, must save the Kingdom of Daventry to become the king. Designed by Roberta Williams, the game was revolutionary and highly influential in the evolution of the graphic adventure game genre by introducing more detailed graphics and animation.

An official remake titled King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown was released in 1990. An unofficial remake was released by Tierra Entertainment in 2001.

    Welcome new admin: Die4Ever!

I'm happy to announce the new addition to our admin team: @Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com

He's mostly known as the owner of mods4ever and all associated projects. Including, but not limited to randomizers for games like Duke Nukem 3D and Unreal, working on Scummvm's Groovie engine, and their lemmy page housing communities for said randomizers and on there you can find your main stop for the "The 7th Guest" game series: !stauf_mansion@lemmy.mods4ever.com.

Application Questionnaire added to account registration.

After a user created half a dozen accounts in a span of 24 hours to "battle" a ban on a lemmy.world community, I'm regretting to inform that I have added an application questionnaire to the account creation process.

I want this instance to be a inviting and hassle-free home for any enthousiast of the retro kind. And unfortunately this means it's a little less accessible, and might take a bit before your account can be in use.

I will get to your application in due time, and will check regularly every day.

I hope this will catch trolls and obvious abusers more easily before they become a pain in the ass of the mods of communities.

    I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

If you have any questions or complaints feel free to reply to this post or send me a message.
