I'm going on vacation (I'll be back Aug 13th)

I'm going to be on vacation for the next week. I'm visiting family and want to spend as much time present with them as possible. So don't expect any posts from me until next Sunday. I'll still check on the magazine at least once a day so if any spam gets posted I should be able to remove relatively quickly.

Do you buy merch?
  • I agree with the conventional decor ruling out a lot of the merch. For me, the problem with keychains isn't that it clashes with my fashion. (my wallet is star wars themed, so fandom keychains fit right in), the problem is that I don't like the change out keychains very often. I need something where my favorite character doesn't change to often.

I'm a sucker for thing "from something" as well, I usually think of food not clothing though.

Active Kickstarters Speakeasy (18+) Funded: An otome set in a 1920’s jazz club. They’re in the last few days of the campaign; working towards a stretch goal for MC skin tone customization.

Of Sense and Soul (BL) A slow burn BL set in 1870’s Victorian London. Features reserved journalist Hugo, and outgoing gentleman (as in landed gentry) Seamus. Includes a letter writing mechanic. They are currently on track to fall narrowly short short of funding.

VERBENA: A Romance Visual Novel A paranormal visual novel set in 80’s small town Vermont. The devs canceled the original kickstarter 1/3 of the way through and relaunched it. The updated campaign is better, but I’m a little bit concerned because this is their first project and they haven't responded to a question I sent them.

    Oppenheimer or Barbie first?
  • They aren’t related other than being released on the same day. They are tonal opposites so people are having fun combining them as an unusual double feature.

Admittedly, I’m going to watch one on saturday and the other on sunday because I don’t really want to spend 5 hours at the theater in one day.

  • Oppenheimer or Barbie first?

I'm going to see both films this weekend. Which should I watch first for the ultimate barbenheimer experience?

edit: The consensus is Oppenheimer. I'm off to see it this afternoon!

  • What are some cool skills that are best learned young?
  • Learning to drive. I've met a few people who didn't learn to drive until their late 20's or 30's and there always seems to be some awkwardness to their driving. On the opposite side, learning to drive at 16 seems to encourage reckless habits to form, people I've known who waited until 18 have much better driving habits on average.

The demographics of Kbin | Survey
  • I don't think so? I'm struggling to think of how it would enhance human rights. Isn't it the same as regular marriage without the trip to the local court? I always thought other countries had it as a penalty so that couples couldn't use cohabitating but not getting married as a tax loophole.

  • The demographics of Kbin | Survey
  • Yep, though the single option is often written as single/never married so that it's more clear. We don't have common law marriages (except a few states) so those 4 categories cover every situation, though without much detail.

  • Lord of the Wings: Demo

It's a Dungeons and Dragons inspired (I think the characters are basically living in a dnd world), romcom featuring a cartoon art style very similar to Total Drama Island. It's heavy on the comedy. If you're a fan of tabletop RPG's I'd definitely recommend checking this one out. If you've never played dungeons and dragons though, you'll likely miss a lot of the jokes. It's fully voiced, and has a good bit of MC customization options.

  • Car owners are frustrated with infotainment confusion, so GM is taking away the most popular solutions
  • A new car not having CarPlay isn't even something I thought I'd have to look out for, yikes. Every rental I've gotten over the past few years has had it, and it's such an upgrade from having to deal with the shitty built in systems.

Reading the article, they're also getting rid of Android Auto, so really this is just GM being too cheap for literally no reason. I used to think Ford was the company that wouldn't survive the transition to EV's. With GM doing stupid things like this and the electric F150 actually being good, it's looking more and more like GM is the one that's in trouble.

  • Potion Panik: Demo

I am here for the this premise. You're a talented alchemist running a potions shop. When your lying bastard of an ex-boyfriend shows up in your shop a year after you've broken up, to "apologize", you quickly grab what you thought was a calming potion so that you can deal with him. Unfortunately, it wasn't a calming potion, it's a love potion! and the only known cure for a love potion is to fall in love for realsys. The two routes will be either your best friend or your ex himself. The potential for drama and angst is just "chef's kiss" top notch.

  • Let's Misbehave: Demo

This demo has the misfortune of coming out at the same time as another otome set in the 1920's, Speakeasy, and honestly it's not as good. I love the premise; the MC, Gilda, is a recent divorcee on good terms with her ex, who likes to have a good time and has a large alimony. This makes her a very attractive partner to the many pretty men she encounters. My problem with the game is in the execution; there are just a bunch of details that don't quite add up.

    1. The text makes it sound like they're near New York City (I think it's set in New Jersey like the Great Gatsby is), but the background art and the accents of some of the voice actors scream that they're in New Orleans. The showgirl, Elsie, especially has a sort of southern girl doing a Transatlantic accent, which is exactly what I'd expect a showgirl in New Orleans at the time to have, but it's be pretty odd for someone in New York.
    2. The character sprite for Gilda makes her look like she's in her 40's but apparently she's 24? Someone else brought this up in the comments of the game's page and the dev said that for the full game they'll be changing all of the character sprites because the artist who did them for the jam isn't available going forward. I think they should just run with it. Make Gilda be canonically 40 and her suitors be in their 30's. It's already implied that that the men pursuing may be gold diggers, this can just add to that. It'd be really nice to see an MC who's not in her 20's.
    3. The murder at the end of the demo comes out of left field; there's no build up that conflict in this game is going to be centered around murder. In contrast, given that Gilda spends most of her time either in "high society" or at the speakeasy, I'd expect the conflict in the game to focus around a scandal involving either one or something related to her divorce. Once again this demo has the misfortune of being compared to another period murder mystery, A Romantic Murder

As for things I like. I really like the UI design and the music slaps. I think this game has a lot of potential, but it's currently a little bit disappointing.

  • Candied Hearts: Demo

MC get's isekaied into a candy themed gacha game. The art style is very cute, or should I say sweet. This is a decent length demo, the plot is fairly basic but I'm still looking forward to the full game because of the unique art style.

  • A Romantic Murder: Demo A murder mystery set in a mansion in the 1930's, but with romance. It's heavily inspired by Agatha Christie novels with a bit of ace attorney and daganronpa. I really enjoyed the demo. The Dev is also doing a really in-depth Jam retrospective which I found quite an interesting read.

    Light spoilers:
I really enjoyed that your investigation is going more smoothly because no one is taking you seriously as a lady detective, it's a nice way to deal with the sexism of the time without making the game too dreary. I'm also ready to die for (with? by?) Adrian because I love a man who reads, and out of all the characters he seems to have the least motivation and access to be the murderer

    more major spoilers:
I only played one route and apparently in the other route some one else dies. In the route I played Crispian is murdered. The author said in her retrospective (part 2) that she tried to balance Crispian being attractive enough to be related James with making it clear that he wasn't a romantic interest. I must have low standards because if he wasn't an asshole, he's pretty

  • I think the rush to recreate communities is a bad idea.
  • Hi, thank you for your contributions!

I find myself wondering how many people we need to have a self-sustaining community. I've been making and stockpiling memes and discussion ideas so I can post regularly, but ideally there'd be enough people so that my posts aren't the majority.

  • Have you had any bad experiences with people on Kbin yet? Can we do better than Reddit culture?
  • I've had some frustrating experiences. A few weeks ago when I posted something, even if other people disagreed, they would respond with the kindness of assuming that I'm speaking in good faith. More and more people are responding to my comments rather aggressively. It's mostly people with far left views, which I suppose is better than people with far right views, but it's still rather off-putting.

It's gotten bad enough that I almost expect for someone to respond to this comment negatively.

  • Personal Justifications for different phone life cycles

Yesterday, I was reading a thread that asked what's the point of buying a new phone as often as as people do. In the comments there were a variety of answers, but what interested me is that there were a wide variety of answers for how long each person liked to go before upgrading. So I've attempted to come up with justifications for a bunch of different intervals. Let me know what you think.

    Every….

Year: You spend multiple hours a day on this device, it’s worth having the most up to date. You can sell your old phone for a pretty good price so it’s not as expensive as it seems

2 years: If you like getting your service from one of the major providers then getting a new phone with a new contract can be a cost effective way of getting new tech often.

3 years: With this interval there’s often a noticeable hardware upgrade when you get your new phone and a 3 year old phone still has some resale value.

4 years: Samsung and Google both guarantee 4 years of support, so this is a natural interval for these phones.

For the rest of these, I’m going to focus on iPhones because I use an iPhone and it’s what I’m familiar with. I suspect that a lot of this also applies to android phones. Perhaps push all of these milestones 1 year forward since apple guarantees 5 years of support instead of 4 like Samsung or Google.

5 years: For iPhones this is the interval you’d want if you always want to have the newest iOS. Most phones get compatibility with 6ish iOS’s including the one that comes installed. For example the iPhone X (2017) -\> iPhone 14 (2022) since it’s not going to get iOS 17

6 years: For iPhone X again, this is basically the same as 5 years, but you stretch it another year because it’s not a big deal to go without iOS 17 between it’s release and when you buy an iPhone 15 a little while later.

7 years: Let’s continue with the iPhone X example. iOS 15 has continued to get security updates this year so it’s likely that iOS 16 will receive them next year. It’s security, not software features, that are truly important and it's the last year that apple guarantees having parts, so 2024 is the best year to trade in an iPhone X on from an economy/function trade off point of view

8, 9 and 10 years: you dislike change, you are incredibly broke or you only have a smartphone in the first place because it’s basically necessary to function in modern society. Plus you get to be smug about being green. Most major apps to support back to iOS 12, which makes 2023 a good year to upgrade from your iphone 5s before all your apps start to break, and your aunt starts to wonder why she can't contact you on whatsapp.

    > > > 10 years I’m not sure what you’re doing, but you do you, keep up the good work 🫡 > >

One final note, if your phone is too old to have a resell value worth the hassle, still go through the effort of finding an electronics recycling drop off. The plastics won’t be recycled but the metals, especially the rare earth metals will be!

Are teeth considered healthcare in your country?

I'm American and in addition to our messed up healthcare system. Teeth are simultaneously so important that I have to see a specialist (dentist) for routine care, but so unimportant that it's not included in my healthcare coverage. Is it like that elsewhere?

I love the new way images are displayed after the update, I have just one little problem

For images that aren't rectangular, the update adds a softly blurred version of the image to the background. In general this looks great, I love it. However, for .png images with clear backgrounds this ruins the image. For example, here's a post I made a few days ago. Is there a way to toggle these soft backgrounds?

Otherwise I'm I'm absolutely digging this update. I immediately switched to Tokyo night, this theme is my jam.

Are lots of websites really going downhill and/or closing or does it just seem like it to me?

Like many people I'm here because of reddit going to shit. Twitter has increasingly been shit. gycat is shutting down in September. To me it seems like lots of bastions of social media are crumpling, but as a previous active reddit user, I've been personally effected. Is this just a frequency illusion or has something changed in the world that has changed the business case of these sites?

My Next Life As a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Pirates of the Disturbance | Teaser Trailer

From the My Next Life As a Villainess series, we get this Otome game. If I'm understanding it correctly it takes place between season 1 and 2 of the anime. During a perviously unexplored spring break where Catarina realizes she's once again in danger as the events of the fan disk unfold. I'm looking forward to this. I enjoyed the first season but stopped watching because I knew she'd never actually end up with anyone. I'm hoping that in this game we can get some satisfying endings!
