  • The problem with that is it will just be a bunch of traumatized kids who have been indoctrinated and used as cannon fodder while the real problems are hidden behind keyboards and walled gardens. Children who have been taught that everything bad that happens to them is the fault of this "other" group they fear and don't understand because of the sheltered and twisted world they're born into.

Authoritarians would LOVE for this country to be split, much easier for branches of control to take over.

  • Oh geez, I completely forgot the feeling of installing a fresh new windows on a comp (like windows XP, hung onto a version called XP-black for the longest). Now adays it's more about removing crap windows installs so it runs smoother. I wish I felt that way about linux, it is faster but I'm always jumping between distros and feels more like a test run to see if I like it.

  • Would the bodies really be at a funeral home though? Maybe like during covid when they were running out of space in some locations but generally I think it only gets sent to a business if the paperwork is done. Would be weird to just start sending random bodies to different funeral homes across the cities every time someone dies. (I have no idea btw)

  • I would say more 2:1 on some older designs but with newer self checkouts you have walls and additional shelving being added for goods instead of just the normal "end cap" style of traditional lanes. Also, reducing the working space of a checkout lane creates more problems with larger purchases. Have you ever tried to ring up a full cart of groceries with a tiny weight-shelf? Shit's horrific and usually you end up needing to get another cart to start putting items in before yours is empty (if the system even allows you to "remove" items from the bagging area).

Again, I think your process is faster, but the average check-out speed is going to be longer which the company doesn't care about since they're not paying people to check out. If you've never had a problem checking out I think you're in the minority, everyone has had something flagged or "attendant needed" during a check out at this point.

  • When the picking, processing, packing, transportation, and shelving of products is all automated I'll be a withered old man and will be damned if I don't steal everything not bolted down.

  • false logic. It's faster for you... only if there's an open self-checkout. I've stood in a self-checkout line waiting while customers try to figure out how to use the machines and there's one employee trying to run around fixing all the problems. The average employee will always be faster than the average customer.

If you're going for faster then pick-up or delivery would be your course of action. Self checkout will always be statistically better for the companies profits versus speed of checkout or customer experience.

  • I think the big difference is the first public radio broadcast was in 1906, regulation started to follow in 1910. Even today you need a license to use the technology.

Machine learning (or ai) has been around for over half a century. Now that it's more abundant in every day life they're trying to pass laws that prohibit regulations of ai.

An argument could probably be made with automobiles, but again those early adopters were heavily regulated.

“The Locomotive Act of 1865,” better known as the “Red Flag Act.” While not technically a ban, it stipulated that, when being operated on public roads, “at least three persons are to be employed to drive or conduct a locomotive” and that one of those people must walk ahead of the vehicle waving a red flag to warn others on the road and to signal the driver when to stop. It also set the top speed on highways to 4mph, and through towns to 2mph. (link)

We can learn from the past, but I don't think we can directly apply or simply hand-wave the fears like it's a previous technology.

  • I'm curious on what you think the purpose of a "demonstration" is or what the definition is in your use here. Also, do you believe "demonstrations" performed by an organized group fall under an individuals freedom of speech?

  • Does anyone else get a weird optical illusion like movement or something like that? My brain went into like a half second panic mode when I scrolled by it while it was enlarged.

  • I haven't deep-dived into the whole thing but from the tidbits of information I don't understand how the previous reply is slop or false.

    From the article:

The California governor has been punching back at Trump over the past few weeks, particularly in the war of words over redistricting. Meanwhile, his press office has turned its social media feed into a stream of all-caps posts, pop culture parodies and AI-edited meme content, aimed squarely at mocking Trump in style while countering Republican initiatives.

from the link in the article: (Newsom's own words)

"I don't know — I hope it's a wake-up call," he said. "I'm following the president's example. If you've got issues with what I'm putting out, you should have concerns about what he's putting out as president

idk, allowing yourself to be changed because of your oppositions actions and repeating their behavior as "mocking" just seems like something the daily show would do... not someone in a political position and hoping to run as a presidential campaign. Not saying it won't be effective, may even pull in some centrists or low informed voters with the stint but still seems weird and not really the best course of action.

  • Idk, I think society has an unhealthy view of "Could've". It's the whole crazy aspect of personal responsibilities and guilt while letting the world continue to plunder and corrupt society (like the recycling program pushes or in this case making it too difficult for children to sleep).

You didn't sleep healthily, so why do you think you could've? Sure, one night you could change it up, but repeated possitve behavioral pattern changes as a youth? Very unlikely

Children have known risk/reward problems. Society demands you stay up and communicate with your peers, also demands we are interesting and have things we are interested in and spend time on. Everyone else stayed up and played/watched this thing so you're left out if you don't. You literally spent all day at school, homework, destressing after you get home, house responsibilities, meals, you would only have time left to go to bed. A young mind isn't going to just resolve to getting that sleep without some irresponsible fun to be had (even staying up reading a favorite book would fall into this category so not something unrealistic for all of us to do).

I don't wish to downplay it, but reminds me of the confusion some people have around depression. Yes, this person could totally change their life with some actions, that doesn't get rid of the mental aspect and only pushes it further down the road. You need supporting infrastructure, routines, and allies to work on making changes. Doesn't just come from "doing" and all.

    edit: is-to be

  • All I can say is, you'll still have those feelings even in a long-term after 15 years together. It's the "grass is always greener" kinda thinking. You're feelings aren't invalid, but the expectations sometimes doesn't come from reality and instead from media. We have such a screwed up view of what a relationship is "supposed to be" because of the shows and conversations we consume. Try to avoid romcoms/etc while getting your head cleared up a bit (anime's are also bad about unrealistic relationship expectations).

The reality is you're just two people trying to learn how to live together (either online or off), just be open and communicate properly. Saying, "Hey, I've been falling behind on my responsibilities and I have to focus on some stuff for the next few days" probably would've been a good heads up. She might've went to the party to distract herself from wanting to hear from you, maybe a response from not hearing from you, or maybe it's something completely different and just wanting to experience life. Just work on communicating and excepting feedback/learning their position. That will go forward with you regardless of any outcome and will be a way to work on things.

  • What's a moment or event in your past where the community came together or helped a situation? alternatively, besides your mother, who is one person from your past community you would like to highlight that also helped you become the person you are today?

  • I agree with your first sentence but then you went off on a mocking-tangent instead of promoting an actual conversation that's important. We see investigations used both politically and socially (perp-walks are one way law enforcement berates during an investigation, also giving press releases/public announcements before all the facts are collected). There are ways which police act respectfully during an investigation when it's someone they like, a more neutral way for EVERYONE can be achieved.

  • My rebuttal is that only those examples of greed are celebrated and honored in the capitalistic age. There are plenty of examples of people living in a form of harmony with nature and some current countries like Bhutan who are doing better. I imagine at different points in time you had a majority of populations living this way but those histories weren't preserved (like Native American) as well or taught as much.

  • Holy shit, thank you for that clarification. Idk why but I had them confused and could've sworn she was pro-trump (the whole RFK thing) but that was just Roseanne. I was even wondering why she was looking 10x better but just turned out I was being a dunce lol.
