Those without A/C, what are your tips to stay cool during the summer?
  • would that principle still apply in the scenario of a window and wall being in the equation? I would imagine if that were true than more efficiency could be produced with a smaller fan inside ductwork vs a large unit which covers the entire cylinder size.

  • TF is wrong with people.
  • There is a sale this weekend at a nearby store, 2/10$ and It felt like the soda apocalypse in there with everyone running around grabbing up case after case. I don't get it, one can and my mouth feels nasty while my body is demanding water to wash it down. I guess if your body is addicted to it you get a different reaction.

The really disturbing part was seeing all the kids gleefully freaking out as they helped carry case after case (some could barely carry one case because they were so young). I have addictions myself and the parent's purchase is their own prerogative, but I would never let my kid participate in my bad habits.

  • it's a big deal jack
  • Seriously, thank you for taking the time to read and respond. The 3rd link is a long word salad of an article they probably could've done better with, some highlights:

Another long, contentious new calendar process then might mean uncertainty with real electoral consequences — perhaps even making it difficult for Democrats running in a competitive presidential primary to know where to campaign, hire staff and advertise.

“These early states really do condition the campaign. The early states don’t guarantee a winner, but they tell us who is going to lose, at least in the first rounds,” Redlawsk said. “The winnowing is very likely to be different if the first state is South Carolina, or Nevada, or some combination, than if it were Iowa or New Hampshire.”

The party can try and mitigate that by starting its 2028 calendar discussions early, potentially even weeks after next year’s election. (we'll see if this come to fruition)

It's effective when you take into consideration what DNC spokesmen require, "they did not reach the standards for their nomination: a candidacy that is "generally advocated and recognized in the news media,".

I can link articles and interviews by Bernie if you wish but I'm going to assume you know of the legal battles and statements made by him during the campaigning and after. "fall-in-line" is definitely my words, but then you go on to describe exactly what fall in line means. The term does come across as negative but the reality is he made declarative statements beforehand and has now changed his position in favor of what the DNC wishes to do... there are other terms I could use I guess but the general description is the same.

I incorrectly assumed you were using the "this is a foreign bot" defense and were telling other people to not drink the kool-aid that I see used all the time so actual conversations can't develop. It's why I included the you and I part so I do apologize for that.

I can't come to the same conclusion you have with the data, I've pointed out just a few of the ways in which the DNC jerryrigs their primaries and candidates. We see the manipulation of media and the cost of running a candidacy which completely undermines any contender. We aren't seeing any "viable challengers" because of decades of hurdles and organizations (both local and national) that limit those who are highlighted, which in turn allows the DNC to say "well we don't think they have a chance so they're not allowed to run". It's like a boxing match where every opponent of Biden's has to wear weights and have their hands tied but "Biden would've won anyways because he's the better boxer".

  • it's a big deal jack
  • more hand-waving, "anyone can make a video platform". No, you need infrastructure, SEO attention, Creators, etc etc. You don't just "decide" to run in elections, the bar for entry is beyond anything a citizen or even most politicians can accrue. Bernie Sanders fell in line a long time ago with the same party he openly said was unfairly treating elections. Vote Biden if that's your choice and I fully support that, but we need to stop sugar coating and pretending everything is A-ok in the DNC if we ever want an elected official who represents the average voter in the party.

  • it's a big deal jack
  • could you reference one better understanding of a policy you got out of it? Looking at it from the lens of undecided/independent voters, I didn't get any information out of it but an upcoming golf game.

  • it's a big deal jack
  • "roll out voting rights", definitely agree with your other statement about the other party taking voting rights but I haven't seen sources for "rolling out" voting rights from the Dems. They may fight gerrymandering which hurts their election chances but I don't see actual democracy being expedited.

  • it's a big deal jack
  • I get so tired of seeing people hand-wave away democracy like it's some kind of amateur sport. This is not how fair and impartial primaries are ran. We can recognize the tech-monopolies and the unfair practices (and untold wealth) they use to squash competition but when it comes to elections? shrug

  • I'm posting this photo because 35 years later, people in China and Hong Kong can't.
  • ok, I already got and agreed with the sentiment that propaganda media is the norm for America. My question is, how are you determining what is or isn't propaganda being put forth by the media companies and articles you are presenting? Anyone can just say it's the truth because they agree with it (look at qanon and general right wing media). What makes the reporting valid to you besides it's apparent point of country origin?

Personally, I just have no clue. I know tragedies occurred and every side will skew the truth for their own perspective (this isn't even malicious sometimes, just seeing a situation play out differently i.e. police forcefully but respectfully removed citizens vs police brutalized and forced citizens to flee the area). I wasn't there, so I wont argue any specific events but I don't just inherently trust one news source over another.

  • I'm posting this photo because 35 years later, people in China and Hong Kong can't.
  • ok, but serious question and I'm not trying to cause conflict but an actual conversation. How do you decide what is reliable and what is not when faced with two opposing sides? I agree that just calling anything conspiracy theory is negative and not helpful. But am I to just decide that "imperial core" is bad and all other media is the "truth"?

I've gone through the links before that you've posted in the past. All I know is fucked up shit went down just like any protest of which the ruling class doesn't like. Am I just to believe your links? The "wiki" page you linked states,

The 1989 Tian'anmen Square riots (天安门事件) were a CIA-backed[1][2] attempt at a color revolution against the People's Republic of China in 1989

it just completely dismisses any complaint that was happening during the time as Carl Zha's video explains the lead up to it. It doesn't help that his reflection is from when he was 12 and living in another area. He even states at 24:70, "One of the deal(s) they made with the Chinese people is ok, you can do whatever you want as long as you don't challenge the government." He goes on to state that the reason the protests needed to stop was because of the economic collapse in the soviet union and fear of it happening in China, not because it wasn't a worthy cause or change didn't need to happen on a governmental level.

Does western media blow protests out of proportion? Absolutely, just look at the Gaza protest coverage. Seems like the state media was doing the same thing with "snipers" being the reason to shoot into occupied residential buildings and a "malfunctioning vehicle" killing 11 by running them over at the square itself. Whether it's been skewed or not, all of this just seems like brushing everything under a rug with some "normie" and America insults thrown in.

  • You kinda have to believe in real magic to study science in-depth
  • "kinda have to believe in real magic" a better terminology for the premise is "suspension of disbelief". I can't believe people are in here arguing about actual magic and not seeing the metaphorical aspect of the shower thought. If it's a conceptual barrier like which can happen with Autism then I apologize.

  • You kinda have to believe in real magic to study science in-depth
  • But either way, when you start, you just have to accept that something has a cause and effect.

It is what it is, that's the point I was trying to get across. People get held up on the why or how which is impossible to know without further studying because it's not always intuitive to our perceived everyday experience.

You know I didn't really mean a "belief" right? Just the ability to let your mind sink in an experience or knowledge without first grasping the full concept "like 'magic'".

  • You kinda have to believe in real magic to study science in-depth

I think this is the biggest problem I see in people trying to understand deeper fields of study, a concept is just too large or out of our perceived reality to even make sense without years of knowledge. I think people fall into the "woo woo" just because it's easier to not really know versus becoming a doctorate in a field of study who has slowly built that knowledge on the fundamental principles needed.

But either way, when you start, you just have to accept that something has a cause and effect. We can't see most fields, just have to accept they are there and interacting the proposed ways because of our tiny little sensors. Sometimes, we just have to say "ok" even if it boggles the mind.

What you wish had an active community here on the lemmyverse?
  • For me, it's any community of Tradespeople. I can find relevant manufacturer and adjacent code regulations for modern equipment or building techniques anywhere online. The problem comes from obscure-ancient technology that was discontinued 60+ years ago, the only references to those are on Reddit and very specific forums.

I recently ran into an electrical panel that was built in the 60's and was promptly made illegal (split bus residential panel, no singular main disconnect switch). Even being trained and educated as an Electrical Engineer, it only gave me the ability to understand what the panel was doing, not the history and use cases of the past (since their use in residential applications is obsolete). I was able to find discussions between inspectors and electricians, how things played out with local authorities, and the on going debate of their practicality by actual professors discussing regulations and safety. I will miss these resources if they become unavailable at a future date (the whole enshitification process).

That being said, places with higher than average traffic (like reddit now) tend to give a lot of crappy answers. Lot's of diy'ers thinking their way is best (whether it's code compliant or not), and others who don't care about discussion and only want to say you're doing it wrong because it's not how they would do it (and nets them the highest profit margin on a job). There's lots of owners out there that are probably afraid to ask a question now adays because of the responses (same linux community effect), even though the information around it could be important.

  • Goodbye Reddit, Hello Lemmy!
  • Eh, anything linked on Reddit has it's own link on here in regards to News. I get news from multiple sources offline and on so putting up with Reddit's negative aspects isn't worth it for me. I also enjoy the discourse on here a lot more, Reddit responses seem more of a "bubble" than the entire Lemmy community you're labeling.

I'll share 2 semi-recent posts I read as an example of why I'm on here instead of Reddit. Btw, both of these posts are about the same BBC article but obviously paint a completely different picture.

Reddit : Crew trapped on Baltimore ship, seven weeks after bridge collapse

    Top 4 Comments (1387 total)

    • holy shit its been 7 weeks since that collapse? (13.4k upvotes)
    • Part of the ship, part of the crew! (4712 upvotes)
    • I think "stuck on the ship" is a better phrase. "Trapped" brings to mind being wedged under a fallen brace or something. (8388 upvotes)
    • So not trapped just maintaining the ship like they’re paid to do. (5756 upvotes)

Lemmy: They detonated chunks of the bridge while sailors are on board because the US won't allow them shoreside.

    Top 4 Comments (30 total)

    • This shit is extremely weird and happens all over. For some reason sailors are just absolutely not allowed off their shitty falling apart ships and have to stay on board even after the owners vanish and leave them hanging in the wind. There are sailors trapped in this situation in ports all over the world - the ships are too damaged to sail, or the owners vanished without paying port fees and the ship is impounded, or whatever. Weird shit. And all these sailors, mostly from global south countries, are trapped. The country they’re stuck in won’t let them off the ship, they have no way to pay for port fees or fuel and sometimes even food or water. It’s utterly fucking bizarre. I don’t think it’s a large number of ships in absolute terms, but it is common in the sense that at least a few ships are trapped in this limbo all the time. There’s this whole world of ultra-shady shipping with ships that are registered in sketchy tax haven countries, or have no registration, and they get abandoned all the time. And sailors in general just get treated like shit. A lot of sailors come from poor global south countries and get treated as disposable. Terrible conditions, bad or no support from the ship owners, if something goes wrong they can be stranded and totally fucked. It’s a mess, like a serious problem for workers. @Frank@hexbear.net
    • the FBI still has their seized phones and shit, so not only are they stuck on a damaged ship they might be unable to reach out to family and friends (not sure what the communication/internet situation is on a ship like that). @nat_turner_overdrive@hexbear.net
    • If you think this is wild you should read some stories about stowaways. I know a guy who sailed with a dude who had been a stowaway on danish ships for a couple decades, and that was a nice story. A lot of the stowaways get tortured and/or killed and then dumped in international waters. A stowaway is any person who is not on the ships’ manifest. Lot of refugees that just… disappear. Stowaways can be made to work while they’re on your ship, though you have to provide them lodgings and food. There’s a lot of people who get found on ships, are made to work and then are unable to leave the ship because no country will take them. Then they’re just stuck there forever. @Egon@hexbear.net
    • How the fuck is “you have to let people on cargo ships into your country at least temporarily” not in any of the treaties we have regarding international shipping? @ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net

I just don't have the time to read through 1300 joke comments to get to the 30 or so of actual discussions I'm interested in. The fact that the top comments are just arguing over terminology semantics used in a title (and not the conditions or situation these people were forced into) isn't something I wish to waste my time on.

If lemmy.ml gets to be like Reddit, I just have to move to a smaller instance and I'm done.

  • What's your method for determining quality reviews on a product?

I've officially concluded I'm at a loss for how to determine if a product is worth it's cost anymore.

    • Brand loyalty with local retailers is non-existent anymore, big box stores etc all seem to be switching manufacturers and I can't buy the same products that were offered before

    • Online reviews are no longer reliable. On site, it's paid reviews by "special" users who are given perks to review. Off site it's paid affiliation links, all of which scream "conflict of interest" to an actual honest review.

    • Ratings are no longer functional. I can view 20+ products and all 1 star reviews or even 5 star reviews just look like copy/paste from competitors or their own employees. Every product has the same reviews now.

    • Quality Control is gone. It's all being mass produced with no oversight, it's a hit or miss type of ordering now. What's perfect for one person, another person will get defective products repeatedly (even auto parts, store brand tools do the same thing)

    • Return windows are a joke, or you pay extra so you can return something defective after 30 days. This doesn't always mean the product is less defective, but if it does then they've just hidden their full product cost in extra "charges".

    • Less often, companies quality tank when switching manufacturers or lowering production costs. I have no clue how to officially keep up with this unless it's random friends/co-workers or a forum post I stumble onto.

So, besides paying 10x-20x more for a high priced company to hold my hand and apologize for every mistake they make (and they sometimes still ship defective products), what are some effective methods you've used to purchase a decent product that will perform for the entirety of it's intended lifetime?

What would you like to see in a house IT setup?

Currently remodeling a domicile, with the sweet and expensive ability to add anything I want within reason. I plan on modernizing the place to bring it into the 21st century because this house deserves it (just a great structure with lots of history and nearing it's centennial birthday).

Luckily, everything is built perfectly for access so nothing is off the table. I came onto this property with my own server "rack" and a mini diy setup for network debauchery, but plan on expanding that and installing a mini-server "room" (a fancy closet I might install in a "dead space" that I can pipe duct work in and out of).

I will be running all new electrical, A/C, Telecom lines, the whole works. I'm currently in the process of ripping out all the old coaxial, phone, piping, anything not ran properly or of a modern importance (probably reinstall phone and doorbell circuits but they're currently strewn everywhere from previous installers). I'm also creating up to date blueprints for the structure and including mechanical systems/engineering schematics for anything I'm doing or plan to do. All of this will be saved to a USB for the next owner and printed out for a laminated notebook to stay with the house (maybe a copy for myself for the nostalgia one day).

The only 2 things I KNOW I want to do is installing

    • a monitor with a pi that will run a weather and local data program that I've been working on into the kitchen area

    • a multi-camera cctv system (local and offsite backup) with a monitor in a neutral-shared living area.

I will probably leave those parts of the system installed here unless it's requested to be removed. I actually would love to leave everything here as a full system package for someone to "inherit" with the house but I'm not sure if that's a benefit or a hindrance someone wants to receive.

There's 3 different plans in the works (3/5/10 year plans, we are here for family but that will eventually not be required and we desperately want out of this area), depending on the time frame I might need to put in

    • monitoring stations for renewable energy systems (solar/wind),

    • a personalized-home weather monitoring system (barometric, temp, humidity) with a display and functionality to control the mechanical systems (A/C adjustment, daylight sensors for shades/lighting, etc),

and a bunch of other off the wall ideas I've been wanting to tinker with. Unfortunately most videos out there of "home setups" include someone with 10x my price bracket and their system is designed for themselves and their specific equipment in mind. I'm wanting to install something more generic that anyone would have use for (like weather and security). There are really only 2 "office areas" that I think would require a hardline besides any monitors I have to install for systems (I don't mind running wiring, but I don't think every room needs an ethernet port to be functional, or am I wrong thinking this way?). I will probably need to install repeaters in two locations though to cover the entire property in wifi because old houses gobble signals up but inside everything "just" reaches.

Everything I've done with my network so far I've gotten around needing a switch (it would've saved me a lot of hassle in the past but I usually find a way to get everything connected or just disconnect unused equipment that's ran it's course), but at this point I can't expand any further without a headache. So now I'm looking at new tech and equipment I don't have hands-on experience with and don't know it's proper use/limitations which I don't like when making action plans. I figured just trying to get a general sense of what people want or see would be a better angle to come at since I don't do this professionally and don't have the insider knowledge of the taboos of home networking infrastructure.

TLDR: What kind of wiring, connection setups are important to you and won't be obsolete after a few years? What do you consider a "modern" house to have or are decent "quality of life" improvements like lighting control, sensors, etc? What's your best case scenario of equipment when walking into a house and seeing a pre-installed setup?

edit: I'm not sure why but for some reason I'm not seeing everyone's comments (assuming de-federated instances from .ml but seeing it since I posted on .world), if I don't respond I apologize and will probably look for a new instance if this is the case.
