Why lemmy instead kbin?
  • There was an Out of the Loop post that discussed this: https://lemmy.world/post/310513

  • It's *them*!
  • did you have a sensible chuckle and look at your friend in a moment of pure happiness?

  • Southern Baptists Vote to Further Expand Restrictions on Women as Leaders
  • I just want to point out that a group of people are gathering to ensure that they don't agree to follow a person that they don't have any obligation to follow anyway.

  • Comcast complains to FCC that listing all of its monthly fees is too hard
  • That's some straight up gaslighting shit. If they can figure out to charge it, they can print it on a bill.

  • I'm not that tech savvy...so please be patient. From what I can tell, the slurs are the only things that hard-coded in. Am I missing something else?

    1. Does hard-coded mean it cannot be changed even though it's FOSS? According to that conversation, they seem a bit concerned that the tables with the slurs can be easily removed.

    2. I'm okay with slurs being blocked, but I guess it would depend on how they define the slurs and all that. Also, maybe it would be a better idea to remove the slur protection from the actual Fediverse and let instances apply their own version, but at the same time, I see benefit to blocking it universally. It's not something that's clearly black-and-white to me.

I guess that aside from their personal political views regarding marxism-leninism (I'm assuming that's what 'ml' stand for), I'm confused as to how that practically affects the Fediverse. For what it's worth, I tend to subscribe to anarcho-socialism, so while I have overlap with marxism-leninism, I'm vehemently opposed to any authoritarian/bureaucratic centralized control of an economy. Which means that I also don't agree with their application of marxism. However, I see that as irrelevant to the Fediverse, and as far as I can tell, the Fediverse is quite decentralized anyway.

  • "We'll cross the bridge when we get there"
  • "Marketing" is a corporate euphemism for manipulation.

  • so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?
  • With people learning about Fediverse, I'm guessing Instagram. Why? Because IG has become overwhelmed with influencers and TikTok-like junk. The initial wave of people into Pixelfed will be techies that want a break from that scene. Their friends will hear about it. The friends that just want to have an IG-like experience to share their pictures with friends while avoiding all the rest of the noise will slowly transfer over. Once they hit the critical mass, the switch will happen. This will take at least another year or two.

  • Serious question: Since it's a federated system that is open-source, what do their political views have to do with supporting the platform? Even if they decide to become Neo-Nazis and change it, the rest of use can continue to use the work they've made thus far and keep it like it is or improve on it. Our use of it doesn't support their political aspirations either aside from their beliefs in federated social media.

  • Summary of Reddit CEO u/spez' responses
  • I personally had a 10 year old account permanently banned for a joke in a literal comedy subreddit that a mod did not like. Not a racist joke, or a homophobic joke, or a sexist joke...just a joke that they did not care for.

Same! My last account of like 5 years with lots of helpful contributions throughout the site was perma-banned for a joke a mod did not like. It didn't violate any of the rules, and it wasn't even my joke. It was a referring to a joke from SOuth Park.

I think that reddit already had problems and the API issue catalyzed the demise. Even if the API issue were resolved 100%, I'm done with that site. It became toxic.

  • would Pixelfed be a working alternative for hosting image files, then linking over?

I'm really getting into the whole Fediverse and trying to limit use of for-profit proprietary services. FOSS or death!

[spez] screwed up so bad, and it's obvious he's quite stupid...I'm wondering if he was given the Ellen Poa treatment. The investor's knew what changes they wanted to implement to increase revenue, had him implement it, then made him take all the flak. Next, they'll replace spez with someone else, seemingly roll back a few of the changes, and say they're working with the reddit community. The thing is that it's obvious that reddit is irreparably infected. The diseases cannot be eradicated because the disease is corporate greed. Reddit began its time in hospice the moment they shared they were going public. It's over. Done. Say you final goodbyes. RIP in pieces.

  • Spez's AMA is live, the shitshow begins
  • spez is a straight up narcissist that uses the same playbook as the rest. it's so evident with the gaslighting, blame-shifting, and smear campaign. at this point, anything he says should be understood to be a tactical play in gaining control by seeming powerful, "on your side," or requiring pity as a victim. his mind is deranged, so he has no other capacity.
