Learned about Lemmy from Reddit but never heard of kbin until recently. That said, I like the name Lemmy a lot more than the name kbin. kbin sounds like a hex editor for KDE, not a Reddit alternative. I love the open source community, but sometimes the names of projects leave much to be desired. Lemmy isn't the perfect name but it's more memorable than kbin.

Speaking about names. What the hell is a "magazine"?? It's like the kbin devs went out of their way to ensure they named everything to be as confusing to outsiders as possible.
Kind of like how Lemmy made up communities? Lol you don’t call microblogs “toots” either. Seems every fediverse software has their own terminology.
Also it’s dev, singular. Kbin has been put together by only one dev. I personally find that damn impressive considering it’s functionally on par with Lemmy being only 2 months old to Lemmy’s 4 years.
Really? Kbin as the name is what intrigued me initially over Lemmy. It’s actually inspired by Linux, the sbin directory to be specific.
Also, Lemmy is pronounceable, like Jimmy or any other name. How many syllables is kbin? Four individual letters?
Also also, "Lemmy World" can be said out loud in polite company. Shit just doesn't work.
Rust > PHP
Yes….on a technical level. But the picture is bigger than that. Personally, I have a hunch that the choice of Rust is making Lemmy’s development slower. This seemed to be evidenced by the fact that Kbin has more functionality than Lemmy while having only been around for 2 months. Vs Lemmy’s 4 years. The Kbin dev has also been much more able to fix things on the fly during the surge in users. Whereas Lemmy will supposedly move off websocket use any day now.
Adoptability isn’t something to be discounted. The fact that there any more people out there familiar with PHP may give Kbin an edge over time. And let’s be honest, in real-world test PHP can very often be faster then - less-than-mature-Rust codebase.

Not for me. I know PHP and not Rust, so if I want to go somewhere that I have a chance of contributing to, that narrows it down.

I suppose there is something nice about a low barrier-to-entry codebase, but I'd be weary of getting inundated with low quality PRs and spend all my time on code reviews. Maybe that's unrealistic, but I haven't seen that nearly as often outside of Python and JS projects
Lemmy is the first one I heard about, and that's where I made my account. Kbin is also a much newer project, so I'm less confident that it'll be around in the mid-to-long term future than lemmy.world, and I'd rather not have to make a new account.
I came to kbin first when reddit shut down the /r/kbinmigration sub. Streisand effect.
Later I learned it was an anti spam feature and not intentional, but the damage was done.
I'm in both, but I'm a Reddit refugee looking for a similar experience. 99% of my Reddit's time was through the RIF app and Jeroba looks and feels the same, so currently I only use lemmy.
I wouldn't mind switching over to kbin if it gets better in the future since I can read everything from anywhere.

Communities is a better term than magazines.
Personally using Lemmy as I find the interface, syntax (linking users and communities), and deployment easy to use.
Also I personally want to contribute to Lemmy and learning Rust is a high priority in my personal and work life.
I feel like Lemmy has more content, probably because it's been around longer, so it's a good base to build from.
I'm also giving an answer to the other thread on Kbin, since I think there are good reasons to use that one as well. They're both solid, and I'm using both regularly--often viewing posts from one service on the other. For me, it's "yes AND," not "no BUT."

Lemmy federates with Kbin, so yeah, it can access the same content for sure. I just mean that, given the length of time Lemmy has been around, there was an existing community of regulars who were already posting heavily on Lemmy servers by the time Kbin started taking off. But yeah, thanks to federation, it doesn't really matter where the content is originally shared as long as Lemmy and Kbin can both access it.
I first was on Lemmy, now on kbin. Kbin is just a much more nicer experience. Also it's not developed by tankies who glorify f*cking Mao Zedong. Simple as that.

Fair enough, but unless their politics influence the platform then there really isn't an issue. So far they don't, and there isn't.
The tankie thing keeps pushing me away from lemmy, but lemmy seems to be the only software getting clients at the moment. So I'm torn. I want an iOS client badly, but I don't want to support tankies.
I suppose I shouldn't sell out for a nice app though.
Not like they get money from that, they do get money from donations, but I don‘t think just using an open source product is support.
I use like hundreds of open source things and idk the ideology of any of the devs and I don‘t care, they could turn out to be serial killers, I don‘t see my use of their product as an issue. Monetary support is the difference to me.
Maybe I got some messed up morals though, wouldn’t be the first time.
I have accounts on 3 Lemmy instances and this one on kbin, right now I use kbin a bit more cause it‘s smoother for me, but if Lemmy apps mature faster I might use those more.
I never really got that attached to any of my Reddit accounts either, so that feels natural to me.
I don't understand why the content looks way different on Lemmy world. I keep getting nsfw stuff in all on Lemmy. If I use mlem it doesn't even bother to blur it. If I use the web page I get that loading as you're reading bug that makes the site unusable. Kbin is just a much better experience at the moment.

What’s a kbin?
Think of it like Lemmy but with a different UI plus the ability to "tweet" on mastodon. I'm commenting from kbin right now, we can all see the same posts because it's federated.

In all seriousness, kbin is developed by Ernest who is an extremely devoted and trustworthy dev. Lemmy is developed by CCP shills. That's the reason I chose kbin.
kbin is also getting steadily updated and I have a very good feeling about its stability and featureset in a few months taking a look at the GitHub.
I like both. Currently on kbin because of the All bug on lemmy. My aim is to use both for a longer period.
Is that where the all section just constantly keeps loading more and more and more and you can't even use it because it's flying downwards?
