  • Get Rob Ashton in and watch that suprene moustache poof a third choice into existence.

  • Place your bets if he's gonna appoint a PM from the NFP to avoid resignation. I think he won't.

  • Yes baby. Ask for this to support the budget!

  • I think the very first step to building resiliency is to sign up for Proton's cloud services. That will give you access to mail, both from Gmail via forwarding and a new inbox with a separate address. You'd also get a password manager and cloud storage. From there you can start self-hosting alternatives. Probably start with Immich as Google Photos is a big deal and it takes a ton of storage. Proton is a Swiss non-profit so the probability for enshitification is not nearly as high as with Google.

As soon as you have redundant storage, do a Google Takeout and download a full archive of your stuff. This feature may not be there for long given the current corporate climate.

  • I'm not disputing that. In fact I'm taking it as a given and reasoning towards the implications.

  • If Israel doesn't care about killing the Israeli hostages, then the hostages do not serve as any leverage for Hamas. But they are used as an important piece for the machine manufacturing consent for the genocide. So that changes the calculus on keeping them hostage I think. I think you're right that Israel would gladly kill 'em. So releasing them could throw a significant wrench into the machine I think. Discontent in Europe is growing and Israel can be significantly harmed economically should the EU take action. Doesn't that make some sense?

  • If we can't independently control our borders and internal economic and other policies, without being able to democratically influence the decisions affecting us, made in Washington, then we're defacto territory. I'm not saying we're there, but rather saying that we don't have to be formally annexed to function as a territory.

  • For a moment I thought this time Bibi might be changing direction to play the peacemaker and hostage-returner. I wondee if Hamas would try to outflank him by releasing the hostages anyway so they can then use Israel's uncooperation against them. That would significantly increase the pressure on Israel externally and internally by killing a main piece of the victim narrative.

  • Indiscriminate force? I thought this would be about freedom of religion. Missed opportunity!

  • It's actually possible to have a somewhat usable smartphone with Android, without Google services. That's just not possible with Apple. You can even buy an Android without Google today. With a phone like this, whether off-the-shelf or DIY, you can have a reasonably useful phone, use the web, and organize without being tracked by Google or Apple, and therefore the fascist US gov't. That's not possible with an iPhone.

  • I don't think they'd abandon their program if Trump kicks the bucket. This is bigger than him. If the right loses power during this mandate, they may not regain it for a long time and they may not be able to criminalize the left to the point of preventing an FDR 2.0 being elected in the near future.

  • I heard a nice line on CBC Power & Politics today - that what we're feeling right now is the powerlessness Latin American countries have been feling for a long time while being in the US'es crosshair.
