Duolingo Fires Translators in Favor of AI
  • I'm studying a couple of languages that don't have English as the native tongue. They provide no grammar notes.

The ones with native English do, but accessing it is not intuitive since you have to go to the Units view.

  • Forbidden Desert, is that another collaborative tile-based game like Forbidden Island? Love that game.

    →checks it out

→yep, looks like it. Very nice. Sorry, no tips. We usually get thrashed at higher difficulty too.

  • Migrants Booted from NYC Shelter Into Pummeling Rain
  • You've made a couple of assumptions about me. That I'm not dealing with it, that I'm not housing migrant families. I'm not one of the people running this shelter, sure. But for all you know I could be running a similar shelter elsewhere.

Of course money doesn't appear out of thin air: it comes from the people, from the taxes we pay as subscription to a functioning society. I happily pay my taxes and would pay more: I vote for higher taxes and exensions to social policy so we can look after people like this. I advocate for social conscience that wasn't exhibited in the described action.

  • EVs
  • I understand the electric bit is cheaper and more efficient in city traffic while the fossil bit is more supported over long distance travel.

It seems intended for the teething stage where the charging point infrastructure isn't rolled out extensively enough for pure EV usage, and public transport doesn't do the thing.

I see a risk in complacency where the final steps aren't taken of rolling out charging points and buffing transit because hybrids are "good enough". Probably not a massive risk though as fossil's stigma grows and fuel prices rise.

  • POVERTY IS A FEATURE NOT A BUG
  • I find brutalism beautiful. Wish we could have more of it in my country but solid concrete, especially preformed, performs poorly under shear.

It's gotten so "brutalist" is almost synonymous with "earthquake-prone".

  • Based on a true story
  • I wonder what gun ownership would look like in 20 or 30 years if right now were enacted (and not thereafter repealed) a countrywide prohibition on advertising of guns & ammo, and on showing any firearms before the watershed and at any time in G- and PG-rated media.

Putting aside the reality that this could never happen because of frozen peaches and strawmen on slippery slopes, I strongly suspect it would do a lot to curb the fetishisation of firearms.

  • Monitor Alignment Alignment Chart
  • Somewhere between chaotic neutral & chaotic evil here.

One of a pair as portrait, the other as landscape; laptop left-aligned with landscape & base-aligned with portrait for an appropriately unholy trio.

I also use workspaces and screen sessions for maximal WTFery.

  • Oh neat, I'm using MessagEase but an open-source alternative, especially one that isn't abandoned, is well appealing.

How are the configuration options? Here's my current main layout- would I be able to recreate it easily?

  • Does anyone else have favourite trees?
  • I adore pōhutukawa, Metrosideros excelsa. Gorgeous colours, heavenly scent when it's in bloom, and the wrought branches and aerial roots give it such an evocative stance.

I'm also a fan of the wind-tortured gigantic Old Man Pine (Cupressus macrocarpa in particular).

  • Te Pāti Māori promise prison abolition in new justice policy
  • I think the idea behind habilitation is that people who've spent most of their lives in the prison system were never properly integrated into society in the first place- rehabilitation implies return to a prior level of fitness that wouldn't apply here.
