When will the IRS simply send me an itemized bill or a check?
Hopefully never, because they don't know if you qualify for credits like home energy efficiency improvements. But a W-2 and the various 1099s make it pretty easy to fill out a 1040. Personally I just use FreeTaxUSA so I just retype the numbers and hit submit.
