No no, trust me, if you speak to a random Texan on the street, a huge number do actually believe this. It's a part of the great Texas Exceptionalism myth. It's dumb as hell, but it's true. Most of my family who still lives there believes it 150%
They wear it like a badge of (misguided) honor.

It truly is, I describe it that way to my husband. He's lived there before but didn't grow up there, and doesn't understand how much stuff like "Texas could secede if it wanted to" is part of Texas mythology that is drilled into your head from a young age by basically every adult around you.
Texas pride is a huge thing; they were actually able to utilize it to lead an incredibly successful anti-littering campaign back in the 80s and 90s. If you drive down most major highways down there, you'll see signs saying "Don't Mess with Texas" and listing a littering fee. It lead to a 72% decrease in littering.
Texas pride is old and very deep rooted.

I love when they talk about how they "were an independent country before they became a state" like that makes them so superior. I always like to remind those people that they were independent because the US didn't want them... Their first official act as a nation was to setup an embassy in DC and beg to become a state every day until it actually happened.

Dall-ass here, seconded. We have enough people rooting that crap on without understanding the consequences. Y'all forget these people re-elected Ken Paxton and Ted Cruz.
