I keep trying to make one. But when I finish writing the name and details I try hitting create and nothing happens, no comment that i did anything wrong either (im ont the mobile site btw)

Ok so different instances have different rules on who and how communities can be created

some require that you ask the admins, and they create it and give you mod priveliges.

some allow you to create communities on an ad-hoc basis.

some only allow admins to create communities and give no mechanism for users to do so.
Generally you can only create communities in instances you're apart of, but you can be given moderator privileges for communities across instances, provided the admins of the instance where the community allow it. If you don't like the community creation requirements of a server? Create an account on another instance and start a community there.
Community names are unique only to the instance they are created on - meaning you might want to do some research and check if the community already exists on other instances.
Otherwise redundancy means different versions of the same community on different instances can have lightly more or less palatable rules and moderators, therefore catering to different people of the same group.
There is talk of adding an option to, on a per user basis allow an option of browsing a combination of communities across instances at once. But it's hard to say whether this should be incorporated into the backend as an API addition or to let the various frontends implement it based off of the data they can already get from the API.

Note you can only create a community in the instance you registered in.
But you can subscribe to communities outside? How do I find communities and subscribe to them outside of my instance? I have some, but I think they came during the initial setup.
Ok so you start subscribed to no one - what you saw on initial setup was the instance "all" or "local" feeds
The all feed is an aggregate of all the communities that the members of your instance follows
The local feed is an aggregate of all the communities that exist on your instance.
If you want to find and subscribe to communities outside your instance - you might have some success with the search function in Jerboa or on the web interface, but that will only show communities that your instance knows about.
There are also community aggregation websites that communities can register with like https://browse.feddit.de/

Which isn't available to beehaw users, but it does advertised newly created communities across the fediverse.
If you have a URL of a new community, you can search it in the web interface on your browser, press the search button once, if it doesn't show up, wait a minute for the caching process to complete and press it again. It should show up in the results and you can click it to open it in your instance.

Using these style links you can better allow people to browse the community or user using their instance to allow subscribing, commenting and following. Different apps have different degrees of support for it, but if you're on Jerboa or the web interface it works quite well.
Click on the communities tab up top, then make sure you select "All" instead of "local". You can search or scroll. And subscribe. I would go into the communities and see if they are active. Lots of communities are duplicated across instances but usually one becomes the main community that everyone ends up using.
Another thing to look for is whether your community name is already taken, on your instance. (You can use the same name on different instances, but only once per instance. Same with usernames.) Sometimes Lemmy just gives you the spinning wheel of death when something is wrong, but doesn't tell you what the problem is.
Bigger instances might be struggling, try smaller instances.
Make sure you're not using any special characters in the name (identifier). Just lower caps letters. Not sure about numbers.
The error message informing you of this is a bit borked.
I just find and instance that allows you to create communities. Make an account on that instance then create the communities and make my normal account a mod. Because my instance doesn't allow communities to be created and I like it to much to switch.
What makes you like your instance so much you don't want to switch?
Because nz is a small place and I like to rep it out in the world.
Are you trying to make the community on reddthat.com (your home instance) or another instance like lemmy.world?
