It is difficult to tell, and please don't take my word for this because I'm a hobbyist, but I pretty sure they will not bite and it's safe to get closer.
I'm going to guess they are Chanterelles. check here
I’ve never seen chanterelles that yellow or growing out of a dead tree, but maybe there’s a different kind in Chicago
some coral fungi and turkey tail?
