I thought Trump said we already brought in 1/2 of our GDP from tariffs alone? We should be able to give backpay to government employees then.

Including soldiers? Maybe? Please say you're planning on deliberately screwing over one of the absolutely key groupings that you need on your side for this whole thing to work. That would be wonderful.
Don't forget: They're not loyal to you. Remember all that stony silence from the assembled generals even when the most popular president in history walked on stage? I don't think they deserve back pay, man. They need to get their minds right first. Teach them a lesson.
Their whole Nazi agenda would probably be a lot easier to implement if they didn't spite, harass and screw the very people they need to help implement it.

This might just be why air traffic controllers are not wild about working without pay. Heck federal unions should demand pay up front going forward. Giving employers a week or two or a month of work before compensations should become a thing of the passed. Money up front before I whore.

Funny thing, they could just declare everyone is eligible if they really cared about the employees...
- Congress passed the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019 does basically that.
  The Act requires that furloughed employees receive retroactive wages for the length of a shutdown at the standard rate of pay.
  
  Right, what I was getting at more was the notion Trump is hinting at that "some of my people say that maybe they won't get paid, that'd be a terrible shame..."
  They want to try and stuff workers and blame the Dems, but if the actually cared they could make it crystal clear today that everyone gets paid. Trying to act all helpless is just laughable.
