Really cool idea - a bread bowl but it's not 7,000 calories. What will they think of next!
Coffin bread starts as a thick Texas toast style slab of white bread. The bread is hollowed out and either toasted or fried before it is filled with a creamy stew of chicken, seafood, tripe, or mushroom. It is then topped with a piece of toasted or fried bread, creating the "coffin" look.
That honestly sounds pretty high in calories, I’m sorry to say. It’s probably slightly smaller than a standard bread bowl, but also full of cream based stew and potentially fried. Though probably not 7,000 calories, to be fair.
It's definitely cold weather comfort food. I was joking, but there's a place in SF that will sell you an entire boule of sourdough filled with clam chowder. I had it about fifteen years ago and I'm still full.
