Maplewood liquor store clerk’s 8-year-old girl rescues Dad, beats armed robber with bat
  • Holy shit, the internal conflict I’d have if my 8 year old kid got involved in a fight with what I thought was a gun and saved me. Thank god it was actually a BB gun, but I imagine that clerk is going to have some compounded trauma because his kid was also involved.

  • Cashing in while he can!
  • Don’t switch to Maxwell House, but basically any other coffee is better tasting than those two.

Coffee is like chocolate though: it basically always comes with the risk of supporting slavery. It sucks and it’s not fair that the costs of ensuring (or trying to ensure, Tony’s Chocolonely can’t even be certain) slavery is not involved price most people out of consuming them.

  • Satire/sarcasm doesn't always work cross-culturally
  • I’m American, studying in Germany with about half my cohort being East Asian students. To me, it seems like we’re square in the middle and I’ll give you an example:

We were asked how we would address it, if we saw our dear roommate finally wearing the sweater they’d spent months knitting and it looked bad. In broad strokes, the Asian students would not address it, the Germans would say they didn’t like the sweater, and the (north and south, not just US) American students would find something they honestly liked to complement and not address anything else.

Some Germans would also find something positive to say about the sweater (“I don’t like the color, but it’s a beautiful knit” or something similar), but they only mentioned that after the American students said their approach, so I’m not sure if that was just social pressure from all the non Germans being shocked at their answer.

These are all totally valid, by the way, it’s just better to be prepared for it. A few days before this class, I showed my old (German) roommate some of my wedding pictures and he told me he didn’t like my lipstick. I still have no idea what the point in that is, but I probably would have taken it better if it had happened after the class discussion.

Edit: I’ve since thought more about this, and given that the others found the American position dishonest (it is intentionally telling only the flattering/socially easier part of your opinion), I can see how each of them would consider theirs the middle position: the Asian students would think that instead of insulting or flattering their roommate, they’d just say nothing; German students would think that instead of saying nothing or exaggerating their positive feelings, they’d just say the truth.

I guess it’s more of a wheel than a line based spectrum

  • [Probably Solved]Any idea what happened to bee.ignoble.dev?

This is a spelling bee clone (or rather a fork, but the dev calls it a clone) that stopped updating a couple of days ago. Has anyone heard anything? It was my favorite version, so I’ll be sad if it’s gone forever.

The code for it is public (but I’m 0% tech-savvy and have no idea what to do with that), so it’s also possible that others have clones of it. If anyone knows of any (specifically of this one, not general spelling bee clones), that would also be much appreciated.

Edit: I went back through the archives and it’s probably vacation, lol. There’s a week or so missing from the last two summers as well. I am surprised that it’s not automated, and I’ll be supporting the developer as soon as possible, because that’s hella impressive.

[Support] I need help with ordering activities

Hi, I’m in a classic college crunch, even though I’m fucking 32 and getting my master’s. I have a paper due yesterday and no extension, but I’m hoping they don’t check the mailbox until Monday.

Onto the problem: I’m exhausted and fried from too much stress and weed, and too little food and sleep (zero hunger though, plus I’m puking from stress, so… I’m eating soup when I can and starting with good breakfasts). I have to write, but I can’t think because I’m so tired. I can’t sleep because I’m so stressed. I can’t calm down, because I haven’t written the paper. Weed ostensibly helps with the first two but very much not with the third one.

I wrote two sentences (the first two in the introduction) in 35 minutes, so trying to push through is… inefficient. What do I do?

Edit: I have already discussed and agreed with my fiancé, we’re not buying any more weed at least until I’m done with my studies, so no worries there.

[Solved] What is the automatic recognition of quantities without having to count called?

When you look at a picture of three marbles, you don’t have to count them to know that there are three there, your brain just automatically knows that, but you have to count to see whether there are 17 or 18. I remember reading about a study of this for various animals. If I recall correctly, humans can typically recognize 4-5, but can train up to 7 or 8, but crows or possibly an insect have a really high quantity that they can just sense.
