Heyyy, I noticed you have provided alt text with your post, however it doesn't sufficiently describe the image.

I've always thought that they shared resources to maintain their environment. If they're growing well it might make sense to try to keep their surroundings the same; if a neighbor dies, something else may move in that isn't as friendly.
