92.5% of new power capacity added worldwide in 2024 was from renewables. It's the cheapest energy ever produced and it's growing exponentially. This is not even a competition anymore, it's game over.
Can anyone point to a new nuclear power project in EU (or former EU) countries since the 2000s that was somewhat on time and in budget?
I think there were only two new nuclear reactors that began construction between 2000 and 2020 in the whole EU, EEC, and UK. One in Finland, one in France. Both ran over schedule, but the Finnish one is up and running now
And the Finnish one was worth it since it went online when the Ukraine war started and renewables are a bit limited still here in the winter (it's basically only wind for winter. Too dark for solar and too frozen for hydro).
But Finland and the Nordics are an exception to the rule.
They finnished it?
i do apologize!
There is Paks II, a second reactor to the aging Paks complex in Hungary. It was built by the Russians, and predictably it's a mess of budget overruns, rife with corruption, and with the war it seems that the govt will have to still pay the Russians despite them not being able to deliver, since the contract was so intensely in Russia's favour most likely. Nobody really knows, since the contract itself is classified until at least around 2046.
Here we go again.
So in 5 years time Reform will cancel the project and the bats will have a new reactor hall cave to chill in.
or they convert it into an amusement park like they did with a never operative plant here in Germany.
It is a new reactor for an existing nuclear power plant....
Let's not get our hopes up, the local council would send a planning officer to piss all over the flying chairs issue a removal notice.
Looks like I have a new favourite example to use in debates with nuclear power shills here on Lemmy 😎
Kind of funny how they are totally not posting in this thread
