    We need another pandemic to straighten things out for humans.

    • The war in Ukraine seems quite real, and so does America’s growing isolationism and taste for autocracy. In a visibly more unstable and divided world, a greater focus on defence is sensible.

      How we are going to pay for it however is another question.

      • People's safety cannot be guaranteed solely by weapons, which we all have a ton of. We see the result of that defensive doctrine in the middle east.

        Stability breeds stability : guarantee people's food security, healthcare access, decent housing, social tensions relief programs... That's what makes a country united against uncertainty.

  • Instead of talking percentages, lets talk numbers (values in Dollars because scraped from Wikipedia):

    UK GDP 2025 (fiscal year is April-march apparently) $3.84 trillion

    1% = $38 billion
    2% = $76 billion
    3.5% = $134 billion
    5% = $190 billion

    • Cool.

      Personally I find it easier to picture % of GDP then number. And find exact number less informative. Billions are just to large a number to visualise.

      But can understand others may see things differently.

      So to add. GDP is the total of all final goods and services purchased in the UK.

      So for every £20 you spend on living costs. £1 is expected to go to defence.

      For a better comparison. Under £4 goes on VAT as many items are at lower rates.

      Either way. It's a pretty huge % of government revenue.

      £192 billion is also what the DHSC expects to spend on the NHS for 2024-25.
