Iran’s top diplomat warned Sunday that the U.S. attacks on its nuclear sites “will have everlasting consequences” and that Tehran “reserves all options” to retaliate.
The constitution gives Congress the exclusive power to formally declare war.
That said, Congress hasn't declared war since 1942, yet we've obviously taken part in many wars since then.
Sadly there just hasn't been enough Congressional support to retaliate against a president for jumping to military action without authorization. And it doesn't help that the average American doesn't know that the president is not allowed to just deploy troops at will (in most cases, Iran included).
It's more complicated than it should be, only Congress can declare we are at war, however over the past 200 years they have passed laws allowing the president to do things before that vote out of a sense of being flexible and Congress being slow , and keep allowing more and more things, I think currently the president can do almost anything with the military so long as Congress leaders are told and they then can vote to stop it, instead of voting to approve it.
It’s fair game to blame citizens of fascist countries for the politics they helped to bring forward. And the "democrats and republicans are the same"-crowd that is very vocal on Lemmy definitely helped to enable this.
we're all suffering because of people who protest nonvoted right now. So fuck them. They're just as much to blame as the maga voters. They fucked everything up. Its fucked. Its all fucked. So yeah, were going to be pissed about it.
Given how Germany, France, the UK etc have all lined up behind Israel, towing the line that Israel has a right to defend itself, and even going as far as saying that Israel is doing our dirty work for us, I have very serious doubts that Harris would not have followed Israel down the warpath.
Congress decided quite a while ago that presidents are allowed to have a little war, as a treat, and only seek approval for it later. It's been this way at least since the '90s and likely before.
Closeted men of war preaching about peace. Closeted gays fighting against gay rights. Judgemental/greedy/racist religious people putting themselves on a pedestal about how you should "take care of thy neighbor".
It's always the ones who preach the most, the same ones doing the exact opposite of what they preach. Always the ones bitching about the bad in the world actively hard at work making the world a shittier place.
Seriously, if Trump says the sky is blue I'll immediately look up just to check if it hasn't turned red/green/pink/whatever.
Be always wary of the ones telling you how to live, and watch out for their actions closely. There's no hate like the 'love' of these hypocrites.
Officially we'll only be able to call that afterwards, during the cold war ww3 also almost begun. We should still try stop and prevent it, no matter how difficult it to argue it hasn't begun yet.
Not defending any of this but these WW3 comments are so weird. The US has been in so many wars in the Middle East, why would this specific one turn into a world war? Especially since there will not be boots on the ground (you never know with trump but I think that’s genuinely the last thing he wants to do).
Well what is genocide Joe saying about the war? What about Harris? Chuck Schumer? Hakeem Jeffries? They're saying exactly nothing because they're inside AIPAC's pockets? Thought so.
Can someone help me out here. How do they know that these sites are being used for nuclear weapons production specifically?
Iran does have a nuclear power plant and they do enrich their own uranium. Not trying to justify these bombings, I'm just curious on how they determined these sites are specifically for weapon manufacturing.
So total bullshit with zero evidence, cool. Just felt I was missing something as they kept calling them nuclear sites without specifying what they believed the sites were being used for.
Netanyahu has been insisting that Iran will have a nuclear weapon in months for a while now. Here's a Jon Stewart clip talking about it: https://youtube.com/shorts/jlqXOwYfpdQ
