What do you want most from the Interstellar app?

With the PieFed API support having been enabled for about a week now, a lot of you have been trying Interstellar for the first time.

What do you feel is missing? What is the feature you would like added most? What pain points do you run into? Also, feel free to include what you already like about the app.

This is no guarantee, btw, I just want to get some feedback from y'all and hopefully we can find some points of improvement.

Lastly, there are a lot of PieFed specific features that are not supported by the API, and we obviously wouldn't be able to add support to Interstellar until they are in the API. We can still discuss them here if you'd like. Those features include Feeds, Topics, Polls, Flairs, Tags, admin/mod tools, and probably more.

  • I have used Voyager for lemm.ee access so long that I struggle to use Interstellar now that I'm on feddit.online. I'm actually on here now because I could not get Interstellar to show me the same content that I get with Voyager.

I change my defaults to show top and get posts from 11-months ago. I change it again to hot and get posts from 5-days to 1-month ago. I don't understand what threads, microblog, and timeline mean. I just want to see type by the time frame, like top day, hot 12-hours, top all time, and etc.

It's too hard to get screenshots and images on my phone so I'll post examples in a little bit. I really like Voyager and Lemmy but I suspect the lack of app parity may be what keeps some from seeing Lemmy as a true contender to reddit. I'm all for improving the experience as a whole so this is not intended to be heavy criticism of Interstellar!

  • The sorting for piefed lacks a few options: Top Day, Top 6 Hours, etc. That is the most annoying so far.

Thanks for developing the app. Cheers!

Will definitely add, I'll make sure it's in the next update! PieFed's API didn't support these options previously (which is why they're not in Interstellar), but I just checked the PieFed source code, and it looks like they are supported now at least.

Thanks for developing the app. Cheers!

      Thank you!

  • I mostly use the Boost App, even with reddit before the purge, so my feedback and comparison will mostly be based on that app.

I would like to customize the post and comment layouts. The instance name, the age of the post, and the username of the author are all smooshed into one line. I prefer these 3 things on there own lines, above the post picture or main body if it's text only, along with the title above the main body or text. Leaving the link below the picture or main body is fine, with the buttons. I like the layout of the buttons on the posts.

I like how Interstellar has full height images on default. Piefed on the browser cuts off images, and I have to click on them to see in full. Boost also has an option to preview more text words in the body of a post, a scalable slider from 0 to 100; I have it set at max at 100 so that I can read long text posts without clicking on them, Just keep on scrolling while reading. The max of 100 doesn't show everything in very wordy posts, but I can see majority of posts in full just okay. What I'm getting at is, I really like this feature and wish more apps had it.

The 3-dot contextual button needs more functionality in the Interstellar App (Things in the parentheses are more contextual options when clicked):
-Block options (community, user, instance, web link)
-Mute options (community, user, instance, web link)
-Share options (link inside the post, post's link, cross-post to another instance, share title+link)
-Copy options (link inside post, comments, markdown formatted link for lemmy/piefed, title of post, username)

In the comments, I prefer highlighting user names vs using icons that take up more space. Interstellar uses a blue "OP" icon to show the author in the comment section, and a green leaf icon for new accounts. Boost highlights the username with a set colour. Also, your own comments are highlighted in a different set colour. Boost doesn't identify new accounts though, a missing feature I like.

Boost also has an option to highlight new comments, in a post that I have visited before, in a lighter grey background colour. I think this requires the device storage to remember your visit to a post, which is fine by me. Sometimes posts do pop up again, and seeing the new comments easily is nice.

Boost has options to filter and mute things without an account, using the device to store these instead of an account on a server. The best type of block is the kind that is not detectable by an offending party, either an user on the platform or even an abusive moderator or admin. One beauty of using a third party is to have greater control of this. Mute is the same as block but it's purposely not associated with an account. I would like more apps, including Interstellar to have these options:
    Muting options
    -Muted communities
    -Muted users
    -Muted Instances
    -Muted words
-Muted web links (Boost does not have this functionality; for example I do not want to see posts with nytimes.com linked articles)

Blocking options (Same as muting but these are saved to your account)
    	-Blocked communities
    	-Blocked users
    	-Blocked Instances
    	-Blocked words
-Blocked web links (I don't think lemmy supports this, and not sure if Piefed has it too, but saw something with feeds base on links I think, but I'm still learning)

Lastly, I would like to have tagging user options. I have a bad memory and cannot remember who is who, especially online with thousands or hundreds of thousands of users when I was on on reddit. Voyager App has the best version of this, because it allows for picking a colour (red for red flag people, or green for good people, etc.)

Sorry for the long post, and no worries if you do not like them, they are my preferences I like or would like to see. Cheers.

    • Wow, thanks for putting so much time into this! We should definitely be able to implement some of these. I especially like the idea of having a diverse set of "muted" content, and having a way to quickly mute something through the overflow menu. Honestly, I like your terminology of "muted" content much better than "filter list"; so maybe I'll rename "filter lists" to "mute lists". Also adding more copy/share/block options seems good too.

Lots of other great ideas here that I'll try to keep in mind! Thanks for the feedback!

  • Thanks for making the app, it's almost 10/10 for me but there are a few UX things that irk me:

    • Sometimes I accidentally tap on someone's username when opening a post in compact mode, leading me to the user's page. I wish there was an option to disable selecting the user altogether.
    • When I tap on a comment notification, I wish it would show me the parent comment from the start. I usually open the comment, wonder what it's in response to, then have to tap show parent and wait for it to load again.
    • I don't know how to hide a community's sidebar. It shows up above posts and I'd sometimes have to scroll down every time I open a community. I have a feeling this might be a bug because it doesn't show up most of the time.
    • In compact mode, you could add a small indicator that a post is a link and not an image, currently there's no way to tell. It would also be nice if clicking on the image of a link post would open the link directly rather than expand the tiny low-res thumbnail.

    That's it. Thanks you~

  • First off, thank you for supporting PieFed and providing us with an app that we can use. I know it's a lot of work and so far it's been decent.

I only have small minor gripes but most of them are cosmetic and could just be specific to my own taste.

    1. Could we add an option to show some of the 'action buttons' in compact mode? I generally prefer using compact mode as opposed to a full card. And it would be nice to be able to upvote/downvote a thread quickly. I think the compact threads are a bit crammed as is, so it might require some adjusting to make it work and look nice. Just a suggestion though.

    2. Not sure if we could do this already, but could we sort the communities in alphabetical order in the pull out drawer?

    3. The compact mode card ... the titles are always cut off at the thumb nail. Perhaps it would be better to just make the card taller to accommodate the title. They could just be varying card heights depending on the title of the thread.

    4. Maybe some colored text highlighting to separate either the user or instance, rather than have everything just one color.

Okay, that's it for now. Again, these are just suggestions for aesthetics and more my own personal taste. They could be something everyone else hates lol. And ofc, some of the things you mentioned already such as flairs would be nice to have ... maybe once they appear in the PieFed API.

Anyways, thanks again for all your work and finding a way for us to give feedback. I don't want to come off as demanding or anything as you don't owe us anything.

    Cheers!

    • Not sure if we could do this already, but could we sort the communities in alphabetical order in the pull out drawer?

The starred communities and users in the nav drawer are already alphabetically sorted. However, neither the Lemmy, Mbin, or PieFed APIs allow you to get a list of communities sorted alphabetically; so that wouldn't be possible for the subscribed communities list.

It sounds like maybe an option in between compact and non-compact would be best for you.

Maybe some colored text highlighting to separate either the user or instance, rather than have everything just one color.

That's definitely something we could add. I know Thunder already has an option like that, right?

Anyways, thanks again for all your work and finding a way for us to give feedback. I don't want to come off as demanding or anything as you don't owe us anything.

You're good, you don't come off as demanding. Asking for feedback and suggestions was the whole point of the post :) Thanks!

  • On iOS, I want back gesture (for returning to the feed from the list).
I also want more space for content. Currently the top and bottom bars are taking too much screen estate. Can you autohide when scrolling?

    • Can you autohide when scrolling?

Yes, you can in fact! Just go to Settings -> Display -> Hide feed UI on scroll.

      • Thanks it is much better with this. Should be the default in my opinion.

Will you consider adding back gesture?

By the way, thanks so much for supporting PieFed!

  • Thanks for the great app! Here's my wishlist (not expecting everything to be implemented, just stuff i'd personally like, up to you to decide if it's good :))

    • Gestures. Can't live without'em
    • Better admin/mod tools within the software
    • Piefed features, like flairs / tags / feeds
    • Very small nitpick; but maybe add the Sub/Mod/Fav/All/Loc buttons as a dropdown menu? I never liked how they were always there.
    • Better, more fleshed out settings tab

Well that's about it. I hope this doesn't come off as demanding or anything, you don't owe anything :D And thanks for adding piefed support, it's great

    • Half of these we already have :) Unfortunately, the other half is not supported by PieFed's API, but it's good to know there's interest!

      • Gestures. Can't live without'em

Settings -> Feed Actions -> Enable Swipe Actions

      • Better admin/mod tools within the software

This is also something I feel is lacking. We already have support for modding posts/comments specifically (mark NSFW, mod delete, pin in community, and ban user), but nothing much beyond that. I would like to improve it sometime soon.

      • Very small nitpick; but maybe add the Sub/Mod/Fav/All/Loc buttons as a dropdown menu? I never liked how they were always there.

Settings -> Feed Actions -> Set Filter

      • Better, more fleshed out settings tab

I agree, I would say the Settings menus are a bit cluttered/unorganized. I'm just not really sure where I would start to fix that. I'm no UX person. Especially considering you couldn't find the settings for the features you wanted :)

Well that's about it. I hope this doesn't come off as demanding or anything, you don't owe anything :D And thanks for adding piefed support, it's great

You're all good, this was exactly what I was asking for :) Thanks!

      • lol I knew some of those features like gestures existed, but I couldn't find them for the life of me. Thanks, Interstellar's looking a lot better now! it'll make using piefed easier :)

  • Thanks for this thread! It's decent, a solid app and I like it. It's just a bit fiddly to use, and text on it is small. Jerboa has larger text which helps cos I'm neurodiverse. It would be better if searching had more sort options, and sometimes I can't find things.

    • I really like jerboa's "press back twice to exit" (if you press back on a screen that would close the app: a toast comes up at bottom of screen "press back again to exit").
    • the bottom of a comment section sometimes is hidden behind my phones back/home buttons so I cannot press the button to open more replies and sometimes can't press the up/downvote buttons. (on S22+)

But that's it for me so far, im a simple person.

    • More:
-sometimes I open a post that has like 45 comments and then once I the post its says no comments, not sure if its an interstellar thing or a piefed thing tho.
-just for covenience, it would be nice to have an option as default image storage so I dont have to choose where to save images.
I really like the app so far 🥰

the bottom of a comment section sometimes is hidden behind my phones back/home buttons so I cannot press the button to open more replies and sometimes can't press the up/downvote buttons.

This is also something we should easily be able to fix.

      Thanks for the feedback!

  • I don't know if I've missed some configuration option, but I really don't like how the current reply works and I would love it to work like it works on most Lemmy apps. You press reply and you get a new view where you only see the comment you want to reply to and then your own reply.

The issue I have with the current reply is that it's just too small. It's a third of my screen so not only do I not get a good overview of my reply I also have to scroll a lot just to proofread.

I don't need to see all the other comments when I replying. Let me focus on the context of why I'm replying and what I'm replying.

    • I don't know if I've missed some configuration option

No, you haven't missed anything. ATM, all replies open an inline text editor.

The issue I have with the current reply is that it's just too small. It's a third of my screen so not only do I not get a good overview of my reply I also have to scroll a lot just to proofread.

I can definitely see it being an issue, especially on smaller screens. Maybe we could add an option to set whether you want commenting to be inline or on a separate page.

  • hey! been using the app this week and is being great so far, but one point that irks me is if I'm in the notifications section and press the back button, I expect to go back to the feed or previous section I was, but it just closes the app and I have to see my reflection on the screen.

the other things I think has been mentioned, like, support for more piefed settings like polls and the like

    thanks for this app!

It works like that because you went to a completely different page via the navigation bar. You'd have to use the same navigation bar to get back to Feeds. I will say, somebody else recommended requiring two back presses in order to actually exit the screen (which we'll likely implement), so that would at least mitigate your issue of accidentally exiting the app.

      thanks for this app!

You're welcome, and thanks for the feedback!

  • On Thunder the 'My Account' tab makes it easy to see my previous comments and posts and the 'Inbox' tab shows me all my replies

On interstellar the profile tab shows me Notifications and Messages, which are not useful to me except for the rare instance of a DM or mod action. I have no clue where to even find replies to my post/comments on interstellar, which I find much more useful and why I've stuck to Thunder (in addition to all the customization options)

Also an easy way to search thru my own comments/posts by text would be great too. In Thunder I can search filter by user which makes it easy

I've also only tried the app with the lw account, so no clue if that limits the capabilities compared to a piefed account

    • On Interstellar, all of your posts and comments would be under Account -> Overview. Any replies to your posts and comments should be under Account -> Notifications.

Also an easy way to search thru my own comments/posts by text would be great too. In Thunder I can search filter by user which makes it easy

I could see that being useful, yeah.

no clue if that limits the capabilities compared to a piefed account

I believe you're correct here, we'd only be able to filter search results by user on Lemmy and Mbin, not PieFed yet.
