I assume both are kind of a backup/plan B instances
I know that Lemmy blahaj have been holding back updating their Lemmy for quite some time waiting for another back end if I understand it right.
regardless of my thinking out loud, glad to see more piefed adoption. it really is great especially the new users on boarding. app situation is slowly getting better, but truth be told, I'm fine with using piefed on mobile browser.
Our lemmy instance is up to date. It's our sharkey instance that needs work done that we haven't got around to yet.
As for Piefed, we spun it up mostly because it's feature rich and many folk are uncomfortable with the politics of the lemmy devs. Migration wasn't an option, because there is no database migration pathway, so we just spun up a dedicated instance.
I created my own theme just to make it true full screen because on android I don't need a special back button, there is a gesture for it and the is back button. But for iOS there is none, so that is why it is a bit non native looking on mobile.
I also tightened everything up for mobile to see more context without scrolling, removed padding on pictures, etc.
But I don't really want to open source my theme because it's quite hacky and breaks on updates sometimes.
Yeah, I think having a strong, vibrant mobile app ecosystem like Lemmy would go a long way. Probably the only thing keeping me back from using PieFed full time at this point. But PieFed seems really promising nonetheless!
