Hello all, Recently Firefox 137 was announces with the addition of HEVC playback with hardware acceleration support for Linux. I am using Firefox 137 installed via DNF on Fedora 41, but if I try to play HEVC video for example from my Jellyfin, it will have to transcode, if I go try this test sample it straight up not play, so what's up with that ? Playing content with mpv will work just fine. Firefox also reports HEVC decoding as supported. Same result with both my desktop with AMD iGPU and dGPU, as well as my laptop with just Intel iGPU.

I only tried with jellyfin and that went straight to transcoding. Idk what's going on.
Hello, HEVC decoding works natively with media using .MP4 containers, but it will transcode when using .MKV containers. Found this information on reddit and verified it on my Jellyfin.

It turns out HEVC decoding on Linux with Firefox 137 and newer does work, but only for MP4 media container and MKV media container is not supported. The bug is open and tracked here: Support mkv|matroska|video/x-matroska in Firefox | bugzilla.mozilla.orgTry and find out which hardware it supports. It's possible they only have NVIDIA graphics cards at Mozilla. AMD might not be supported at all, or only newer cards might.
