With this script, when a user is permabanned, DMs sent from the account in the previous 24 hours will automatically be marked as deleted.
We have set the time to 24 hours to ensure that the majority of pre-existing (non spam) DMs are preserved in the event of an account being banned. That being said, if you lose a DM to this script that you need recovered, please reach out to myself or Kaity, and we can restore it manually for you!
This is a secret so be sure not to tell anyone else, but you'll be blessed with good vibes and no spam regardless of if you say the magic words or not !
Phew. I've felt dreadful looking into my inbox lately, because I really don't want to see the gore image.
I wonder if we could get an option in account settings to restrict who can DM you. Like the options could be everyone, nobody, and a setting where someone can send you a request but not any images unless you accept the request. I think that this would be a good feature if this kind of spam gets more common, and prevent things like unsolicted nudes or gore.
That will have to come from the lemmy devs. I'm hoping that they're working on something like that given the scale of the issue, but not being involved with the lemmy dev team, I don't know what the plans are
Something is broken with reporting DMs. I'm hoping it will be fixed when we upgrade. If not, we'll have to go digging to see what's causing the problem
Understood, but at the moment, you can't even do that because you can't delete DMs through the user interface or set controls on who can send you DMs. Until we get options in lemmy that let people take control of their own approach to spam DMs, this is the best we can do, because unfortunately, "do nothing" just means spam impacts everyone, and given the nature of some of that spam, that's not an option.
Edit - I just noticed you're not a blahaj lemmy user, so this won't impact you in any way. It's specific to users of this instance
