I got a server recently and now I need storage and I’m a little upset seeing the prices of HDDs.
My aim is for 4x10TB to run on RAID 5.
I saw other people linking serverpartdeals and they do ship to the uk but the shipping is insane particularly as I want to buy them one at a time to spread the cost.
So what would you guys suggest? New ones are hella expensive, but I can’t seem to find any decent places selling manufacturer recertified ones.
I strongly recommend not putting 5x 10tbs in raid 5 if you value data integrity of the set. Chance of failure during a rebuild following a dead disk is disproportionately high.
Consider instead: Raid 1+0, Raid 6 or ZFS. I use 1+0 in my 4x4tb set as a reasonable compromise for usable space and speed.
I’ve used Robert’s Electronics several times in the past. Generally ship from Singapore but never had a problem with them. Always arrive well packed and have always been new and sealed.
Thanks this looks ok and reasonably priced. It does say ships from Singapore but it’s free shipping.
This is what annoys me about how trash search is these days. I’ve been searching for HHDs for days and not seen anything but the same few dozen sites.
Same when using Amazon, not to buy from but as a listing, and you put 10TB and you’ll see a few sponsored for 6TB. Like I don’t fucking want a 6TB else I woulda searched that.
I wanted to reply that snapraid or the equivalent will lead to less wear and tear, and provide reasonable redundancy that you can trigger as needed. It's also a lower electricity bill and allows mismatched drive sizes.
It's also arguably easier to recover data on failures.
