This always seems to be the narrative with "conservatives". They take something away, but say that they are doing that exactly to give more of that thing.
The one complaint you hear in the documents of the Confederacy at the time is bitter resentment over non-slave-holding States using their rights to defy the Federal Government from enforcing the fugitive slave act.
