The future of Melbourne's bustling Sydney Road hangs in the balance as cyclists fight for car parking to be removed, while business owners say the replacement of bike paths will force businesses to close.
Thereâs bugger all parking on Sydney Rd compared to the number of shops and people visiting them. Maybe all the cafes and restaurants would do even better if it didnât feel like sitting in a traffic jam when youâve got a table on the footpath.
Sydney road local here. In a gist local businesses are losing business to locals as itâs miserable on a weekend for any form of transport that we avoid Sydney road all together. Losing more business than a 2hr parking spot will give them.
I had a longer reply on reddit to this a couple weeks back if people are interested in me copying over.
Sydney road local here. On the weekend we try to avoid going near Sydney road outside of direct walking distance as itâs miserable to drive, walk, cycle or catch a tram.
The trams are so slow due to cars, which causes them to be over capacity due to the infrequency of them turning up.
It is unsafe to ride a bike as youâll get doored or youâll get swiped by a cars changing lanes without looking.
Walking isnât the most pleasant due to the amount of traffic on the road (noise and air pollution ect).
I shouldnât be required to drive to go to a business 1.5km down the road.
When you are choosing a couple car spots over the business of your local communities youâre already losing.
Has anyone done the traffic modelling to see what would happen to cars heading north/south if Sydney Rd won't allow for cars? Will it make a mess of Lygon, Nicholson St and Melville Rd?
