Agreed. Its really well written, but 90% of the characters would have to look and be a decade older to feel comfortable enjoying it. I spent more time being very uncomfortable with the csam (can't even really call it "borderline" in the manga) than I did enjoying the story and world building.
If anything, reading it made me more wary of manga with obvious children in the cast, and less likely to read it through (I read through made in abyss with a morbid curiosity about whether the author would tone it dow n in later chapters, and holy shit did they not do so).
Yeah, the setting, the characters, and the music all mesh together really well to make one of the most compelling anime stories I've ever seen. I've got more songs from that show in my daily playlist than most others combined, but whenever I tell someone it's my favorite anime, I can feel their suspicion.
Yep, love the show but also cannot recommend it. The mangaka 100% knows how degenerate it is, but I'm not surprised because that's the Japanese for you.
The stuff that probably got cut (I haven't watched it) would be the borderline-porn and blatant-nudity. The inner covers have the characters fully or partially naked, detailed nipples included.
After getting through a couple books to the typical "hot springs scene" I had to drop it. I otherwise really liked the setting and exploration of the abyss.
