South Korea president survives impeachment after governing lawmakers boycott vote
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has apologized to the nation in his first public comments since his abortive attempt to impose martial law threw the country into political chaos and led to calls for his impeachment.
South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol survived a vote of impeachment on Saturday after the vote was boycotted by governing party lawmakers.
In another day of high drama, a number of lawmakers left parliament ahead of the vote to impeach President Yoon over his decision to impose a short-lived period of martial law earlier this week. Just two remained inside while the one governing lawmaker who returned voted against the motion.
Outside the main hall, opposition lawmakers could be heard shouting, “Go inside [the chamber]!” and calling them “cowards.”
This is partisan politics at its finest. Every time you side with the people from your own party even though they've been obviously shitty, you erode what's left of the electorate belief in the effectiveness of democracy. And that's how you get fascism.
I think ROK voters will remedy that problem in due course. Unlike American voters who'd gladly pay with their freedom today for some cheap eggs on Tuesday.
We don't even think that far ahead unfortunately. Just think football team with red jersey, everyone else bad, ideas bad, reading bad, and you'll have a perfect representation.
