Musk, who has previously said his daughter was “killed by the woke mind virus,” has been estranged from Wilson since 2022. That year, she legally changed her name and gender to distance herself from her father.
I'm glad she gets to leave. Obviously this is a good thing for her safety. It upsets me though, because she would have been one of the best individuals to stand up and help. Some of us don't have the ability to run. If we don't stand together, we fall separately.
Why does she have to be the one to bravely stand up when 15 million people, Democrats, progressives, independents, didn't even bother to stand up next to her putting her in this situation?
Nah, the American people showed her what's kind of allies they would be and she's doesn't owe the moderates MLK wrote about to stand up with a target in her back when they won't have her back to begin with.
The American people loudly stood up and shouted "I am ok with bigotry, fascism, and also fuck you ". I don't blame her for running.
I didn't say she had to. I said she would have been one of the best individuals to do so. She has the unique position to push back at the transphobic rhetoric that is being spewed by those in power. One of which is her bio parent. She of all the fellow trans persons could have been a great face for a movement.

Those that can stand up to tyranny but choose not to, are burdened to shoulder the blame of the tyranny.
There are still ways to fight from the outside. We'll need support from everywhere, both in and out of the country. I don't think her moving means the end of her fight.
Her actually leaving and stating it is a great form of protest.

Changing your legal gender is not what makes someone trans. There are tons of trans folks that never change their legal gender for lots of different reasons, even if they're theoretically able to. It's just one of the steps that trans folks might take, and not typically an early step, but it's by no means a binary that defines whether someone is trans or not.

my motivation for swapping “changed her legal gender” to ‘“became” trans’ was to highlight how, from my perspective, her gender transition has frequently been talked about as something that’s “done to others”, rather than as just a part of who she is. in the sense that elon musk talks about it as “losing a son to the woke mind virus”. and that sentence of the article felt like it was feeding into that narrative a bit.
but in hindsight, i definitely could’ve worded things better to make that point more clearly. my goal in putting “became” in quotes was to try to highlight how there isn’t really any set of actions people need to take in order to become trans, but it seems like that’s how some conservatives are talking about it. but i also don’t think i made that point particularly clear in my comment either.
In response to that story, Musk spewed some vile transphobia [CW!] that Wilson had to endure.
Image being under international sanctions and not being able to leave the country you happen to be born in. According to many lemmy users this person shouldn't be able to leave and should march into the white house demanding trump resignations.
