More than 200,000 people had canceled their digital subscriptions by midday Monday, according to two people at the paper with knowledge of internal matters. Not all cancellations take effect immediately. Still, the figure represents about 8% of the paper’s paid circulation of 2.5 million subscribers, which includes print as well. The number of cancellations continued to grow Monday afternoon.
A corporate spokesperson declined to comment, citing The Washington Post Co.'s status as a privately held company.
Remember when Bernie Sanders got dismissed as a crackpot Trumpian conspiracy theorist for suggesting that a multi-billionaire owning WaPo influences its coverage? Much like how most of a glacier is underwater, most of the influence is more subtle than this and has been happening behind the scenes for ages; I'm just impressed with how brazen it's getting.
This is endgame. The folks on top decided that there's no point in being surreptitious anymore and they're acting openly, because who can do anything about it?
This is going to be fun to watch. Eight percent is a Big Fucking Deal in a matter of days for a newspaper. I know of no precedent for what the LAT and WaPo have just done.
I wonder what the good alternatives for people would be (aside from shopping local. Sometimes, you just can't, depending on what you're trying to find.)
Are there any other big stores(owners of said stores) that have endorsed Harris/spoken out against fascist and authoritarian behavior?
The reason I ask is because I feel like in our current systems, it's impossible not to support shitty groups or people. The money funnels up to the top
What are some of the things you can't find outside of Amazon?
For me, I've noticed that a lot of items just seem to be resellers from Alibaba or wherever else to get vast quantities for low prices. Amazon even has it set up so that sellers can just ship from the source, so the reseller has nothing but the listing.
Other more niche items can exist, but I think they could be found. Recently I was looking at stuff for record players, and there's a fair amount f ones on amazon that don't seem available elsewhere, but I think it just requires searching a bit harder for longer.
