How did the marketing of Woodstock lead to a 500,000 person flash mob in the pre-digital era?

This is a great question. I wish more people would see this. I feel like someone should be able to answer this from living memory still.

I’m guessing rock radio which would have been probably THE platform at the time apart from the odd late night tv appearances.
