Best Lemmy App in 2024

Voyager works great for me.

I am fully on the Sync train. It does get a lot of hate here because it's not FOSS, but it was the best app around for Reddit, and the dev converted it for Lemmy. It's so far above and beyond everything else that I'm happy to pay for it. There's a free version with ads, and there's the expensive paid upgrade ($20). The dev regularly disappears for months, but when he surfaces, he'll roll out a massive amount of bug fixes and features.

Yep, nothing beats Sync, although the other existing apps are great, and have been great since the beginning if you ask me.

If you wanna know why I chose Sync instead of any other app is because the damn app can survive even the worse ROM you use and it doesn't matter how atrocious your RAM management is, you are likely never gonna miss the position you left when you minimize and open other apps.

The app basically saves the state where you were and it is highly unlikely that you lose the track of it, even on aggressive RAM management ROMs like MIUI, it still stands better than the others, I experienced the same with Sync for Reddit.

If you're running a pi hole, the free version is ad free too
- But it look shit because they show ads like post. If you want real solution try Re-Vanced. (Hopefully I don't get downvoted by Sync user)
- Or AdAway, of any of your preferred DNS blocking methods.

Android user.

I used Liftoff until it broke with the API change a couple months back. The Dev has been AFK looking after twin kids. Hope they are going well.

Tried Thunder for a while but it kept crashing or forgetting what post I was looking at when switching between apps.

Using Voyager now and I am quite happy with it. I miss the All servers you have accounts with feed view from Liftoff but that is not a biggie.

Basically same. I also tried sync and another one that I can't remember but I stayed with Voyager
Yeah, once Liftoff stopped working, I switched to Boost.

Shout-out for boost

Android app store says this shares purchases, location info, device ID and app interactions with 3rd parties... Voyager shares no data with 3rd parties.
- If you pay for boost, it does not share any info with 3rd parties.
- Only if you use the free version with ads.. which I wouldn't recommend. Paid version doesnt do any of these things.

I use Thunder. It looks nice, runs well, is actively developed, and the devs are very communicative and open to feedback.

I use Jebora and am happy, is there something important I'm missing? I was a Reddit is Fun user before and I like both because of how simple and basic they are. I hated the official reddit app for the reasons above.

Edit: the one thing I don't like is you can't, or I don't know how, to collapse all child comments.
- I will admit I am very biased as a contributor to Thunder. I'm not an expert on all clients but Thunder has some super cool features.

  The agility to post and (soon) comment as any of your logged-in accounts.
  
  Notifications for inbox messages, soon to be integrated with UnifiedPush.
  
  Really good Lemmy link parsing and in-app navigation.
  
  Ability to favorite communities.
  
  Customizable swipe gestures, username and community name formatting and coloring, action colors, etc.
  
  And these are just some of the recent things on the top of my head! I'm sure others can chime in with things I missed!

It has my favorite user interface, but I feel that it bogs down after viewing a series of images. ~~I also feel that development has stalled a bit~~ (edit, I was mistaken: they just released a pre release).

I haven't found a better one, though. Next best so far has been Racoon.
- Image caching is something that has had to have been tuned over time. It can be really RAM hungry but at the same time it can be dumb to re-download images if you have the RAM to spare.
  
  Latest versions no longer cache a lot of images, but aggressive caching can still be enabled in settings.

I love the Connect app(Play store link). It's incredibly feature-rich for being so early in the game.

I cannot understand why anyone would use an app with Ads when connect has none and it's free! After getting used to no ads, pure content, I would hate to go back.

I used to use boost for Reddit, but I'm securely in the connect camp now.

It's decent for my use.
Tho, some option simulating the multireddit option would be good. But it might be becoming a feature request for lemmy than a lemmy app there.

Does it save drafts yet? That was my reason to switch to boost.
- Don't know about Jerboa, but Thunder has been saving drafts for a while now.

Sync. Customizable, pretty, working without issues, dev keeps on updating. Really good app..

I used Boost after Lightning died, it works great and i have no desire to look for another one. I used boost on reddit too

Used to use Eternity, but switched to Voyager. I like Thunder, but Voyager is better at pulling in pictures posted outside of Lemmy.

Early on I tried out other apps and they looked snappier and had many features but none I used.

Jerboa though has always worked and by default everything works exactly as I want and expect. So for me it can't be beaten.

Jerboa works fine... except when I have to search for something. Why is 'search' not a 'search post/comments' function but a 'search community' one?
Jerboa went though a period time relatively early on in it's development when it was a buggy, nearly unusable mess. It started out cool, then it shit the bed, and now I guess it's cool again lol.

Unfortunately I didn't wait for it to get good again at the time and I ended up switching to wefwef, which has now been renamed Voyager. Voyager never really went though a buggy period on my end as an Android user.

Sync, all the way. I strictly used Sync for reddit after the first real enshittification (to me) of reddit a couple years back, and once the app was reworked for Lemmy I switched and haven't looked back.

Like others have said, it looks great, almost fully customizable UI, works really well, and saves your place when you're scrolling through comments on posts if you back out.

Sync, used it for who knows how long for Reddit, and none of the other options I tried before it was released for Lemmy came anywhere close to feeling as nice to use.

I can't recommend Sync in good conscience with the update policy. The dev keeps going AWOL for months, even when breaking issues exist.

This was fine when I paid something like 3€, but it's no longer fine when I pay 20€.

I used boost for Reddit and use Boost for lemmy since day one (of the app) I love it.

I personally use Thunder. It looks great.

- Thunder was my first and I loved everything about it except tap-iPhone-lens-area-to-scroll-to-top being absent (or me being an idiot) had me switch.

I've been loyal to Sync. Few quirks that need to be resolved like support for Lemmy spoilers, but other than that it's been fantastic.

I use jerboa and so far my only gripes are being unable to unblock communities or users unless you go to the desktop page and the upvote system being a percentage instead of just an up and down counter.

I originally used boost as that's what I used for reddit but boost is crammed full of ads unless you buy the premium version.

I used Memmy up until development stopped and now use Voyager. It feels the most like Apollo did so it's got my vote for best app

Thank you for pointing this out! I was using Memmy because it was first on the App Store but have since switched back to Mlem (which I did beta for). It is a hell of a lot more fresh on features!

I realllyyyy like Jerboa, but the only thing i have to compare it to is the web interface. I've never tried the other apps.

Still using Sync and Voyager. Voyager so similar to Apollo and Sync also solid as their Reddit client.

I find Boost for lemmy to work really well for me. I also use Voyager as a backup.

Thunder. It feels most similar to what I used back when I was still using Reddit.

In the beginning, it was a mix of LiftOff! and Jerboa. The dev of LiftOff! had twins and understandably, he hasn't returned and the app has fallen to the wayside.

So I tried Thunder (available on Android and iOS) and it's been really good, lots of regular updates and features as well.

The website's been updated, so we can link to that now.

Summit is the best option I've found, to replace RIF that I used to use back when I was using reddit.

Ouch, so sad only one mention of Summit. I was on Boost for Reddit, and then Liftoff here until that died. Boost development was going slow it felt like, and I just didn't feel the workflow was what I got used to posting to Lemmy.

Summit felt great to me, has a ton of great features, and the dev is super responsive and has incorporated many of my requests and has fixed bugs I've reported very quickly. I love me some Summit for sure and I don't know why it's gone relatively unnoticed.

I've been using Jerboa, but tempted to swap to Voyager.

Saw Boost mentioned already, but also I think Tesseract deserves a shoutout for clean and modern web experience.

I'm on Boost after trying a lot of them. On my backup phone there's Raccoon

I just use the default website in Firefox for Android.

Currently enjoying Arctic and Voyager. Arctic has potential to be my final app of choice.

Eternity was my favourite and I still use it sometimes, but now I'm mostly using boost.

I've had the best experience with Summit. Went through quite a few before stopping here.

Like others I used Liftoff but had to move on when API broke it & dev is getting on with real life stuff.

Moved to Voyager. It's good but as an android I still find it a bit strange using what looks like iOS interface. I still get a bit lost when uploading a post & usually have to edit it a few times. No biggie, maybe I should post more & get used it it 😃

I still miss the Joey app from the other place.

Boost is excellent. Very cheap to remove ads and it's just fast and minimal AF. The developer does a lot to maintain it also, it's not abandoned like some others

I used to use that other site with Infinity, which was Infinity for Lemmy first, but over time, became Eternity, so that's what I've been using.

Summit is the best app I've tried, with Boost a close second. It's got tons of features and is updated frequently.

I hop around periodically through iOS options, I’m using 2 main ones right now: Arctic and Avelon

I tried a lot of them when the reddit exodus was new I settled on voyager and alexandrite. Voyager has a great app (which is just the web page converted to an app) alexandrite doesn't have an app but it's has the best experience for me.

Been using Lemmynade (!lemmynade@lemm.ee) and am super happy with it. My instance also has a really nice looking frontend that works as a PWA as well.

None of the *bin apps I've tried seem to really function well just yet, so I mostly just use the default PWA for the Mbin instance I'm on. It works well enough. Though I'd really love a standalone app, especially if it could handle loading URLs to other instances clicked from outside the app; being taken to a community I'm already subscribed to but not being able to vote or comment because the link I clicked went to the original instance instead of the one I'm logged into is annoying.

I used Jerboa and then Eternity, now I use Voyager which I think is very good and stable. I've never tried Thunder.
