Why do so many lemmy instances have non-traditional TLDs?

I’ve seen:

  • .ml
  • .social
  • .world
  • .cuz

Is it due to cheaper registration and/or renewal fees? Or are there simply more availability on those TLDs?

  • Not an expert, but to me it simply seems that you can have more domains that start with Lemmy.

  • my guess is it's the same as why they're used on mastodon — they're fun

  • I think theyre cheaper. Due to being the standard, .com, .org etc are more sought after.
