Me rn with bikes. I just got into bikes and a couple days later I'm scouring through my county's website for trail maps, looking at what public transit is being funded, doing research on bikes, planning locations to bike to, and buying equipment.
This is soooo relatable... My most recent obsessions were tornados and caving. Spent so much time learning all the lingo, I even located a local caving club I swore I was going to join. And then poof, my interest shifted to something else! Haha
Hehe me too!! (First post on Lemmy too…no more lurking since I’ve found “my people”!)
My obsession at the moment is with internet privacy and reducing data available to insidious ad companies….
But my usual staples are always Star Wars (I love it all - don’t get into the arguments/opinions about it either as I just love it all) Cycling (MTB and gravel cycling as well as bike packing) and Aviation/Aerospace (it’s my job too) ☺️
Then I think you're ready to make the full jump to FOSS. I was into Linux when I was a little pre-teen, and I've only gotten more into it as big data hungry mega corporate induced culture preyed upon us.
I still use Twitch and Discord but I finally deleted my data on Instagram, Twitter, Reddit and rn I'm working on doing the same for Microsoft and Google. Goodbye Android.
Absolutely however I do not own a person computer currently as I have to use one for work - when I did own one until recently I usually ran Manjaro on it. I started tinkering with Linux back in the days of early Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows XP :)
[Tries to hide the look on his face that this is a flat-out lie]
Seriously, though, my partner handles my obsessions in the best way. She lets me go off & ramble about them, and when I've reached a kind of pause, she cuts in with:
"Ryan, your autism is showing," in an endearing tone of voice that's short for "I love that you do this, I want you to keep doing it, but I have no idea what you're talking about." lol
I feel this deep in my soul. As an AuDHD'er, I have my main obsession which I can always return to (BBC Sherlock) and a continuous rotation of new, short term hyper-fixations. At the moment this has included: gem faceting (I'm a sucker for geometry and working with my hands), home brewing (never gonna do it, but love to learn about it) and ultra-marathons (in a sense of watching Youtube videos about people that run them, there is no way in hell I am capable of such feats).
Home alcohol brewing? Cuz I do home coffee brewing and it scratches the etch just enough so that I don't go out in a frenzy and intoxicate my self with adulterated alcohol 🥴
Yeah, I was referring to alcohol, but coffee is by far the better choice ;) I got really into cold brew coffee a few years ago, it's really delicious and way better than iced coffee in my opinion. The only downside is you need to plan ahead if want it, and I'm terrible at remembering stuff like that.
Imagine notes, ok, now imagine notes that are super ez to link to each other, so you can have your own wikipedia of your life or any topic, and you can also make the notes small, and suddenly you can navigate any topic that you think about and build on ideas super fast and become an information dragon with an enviable hoard of growing knowledge and self-reflection
This was me with ants for 3 weeks immediately right after finding the AntsCanada channel. Then I forgot about ants forever. Probably for the best, I might have not been their most responsible god.
